  • Discharge Screening Predicts Persistent Parental Psychological Distress After Pediatric Critical Illness

Open Access•Louise C Rosenberg, Gabrielle Silver et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

Background/Objectives : Pediatric critical illness constitutes a highly stressful event not only for the critically ill child but also for the broader family unit. Recognizing and addressing these family-level effects is essential to optimizing outcomes for PICU survivors. Methods : This prospective observational cohort study examined anxiety and depression in parents of pediatric ICU patients prior to PICU discharge using the Hospital Anxiety an…

  • Challenges and strategies in the psychiatric care of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish population

    Open Access•Aaron M Bloch, Ezra Gabbay et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatric…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Despite the importance of accessible psychiatric care for the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, prior research has characterized how stigma and suspicion of secular institutions limit mental healthcare utilization by this population. No study, however, has interviewed a cohort of psychiatrists to identify commonly encountered challenges or successfully employed strategies in the care of ultra-Orthodox Jewish psychiatric patients who have overcome …

  • Bothersome symptoms at midlife in relation to body fat percentage

Open Access•Linda M Gerber, Brian W Whitcomb et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2024

OBJECTIVES: Increasing obesity has been associated with a higher frequency of symptoms at midlife. Bothersomeness represents an important measure of perceived symptom severity, but has received relatively little consideration, and relationships between symptom bothersomeness and obesity are not known. We evaluated the association between body fat percentage (%BF) and the bothersomeness of symptoms at midlife. METHODS: This cross-sectional study i…

  • Association between Platelet Transfusion and Delirium in Critically Ill Children

Open Access•Matthew Nelligan, Marianne E Nellis et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Delirium is a frequent, serious, and preventable complication in critically ill children. Inflammation has been implicated as a mechanism for the development of delirium. Platelet transfusions may potentiate the body's pro-inflammatory responses. We hypothesized that receipt of platelets would be associated with delirium development in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). We performed a single-center retrospective cohort analysis including chi…

  • Neighborhood cohesion and violence in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and their relationship to stress, depression, and hypertension

    Open Access•Lily D Yan, Margaret L McNairy et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Neighborhood factors have been associated with health outcomes, but this relationship is underexplored in low-income countries like Haiti. We describe perceived neighborhood cohesion and perceived violence using the Neighborhood Collective Efficacy and the City Stress Inventory scores. We hypothesized lower cohesion and higher violence were associated with higher stress, depression, and hypertension. We collected data from a population-based coho…

  • Does Parenting Style Affect Adolescent IBD Transition Readiness and Self-Efficacy Scores

    Open Access•Lynsey R Zuar, Kimberley A Chien et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Given the inability to delineate different parenting, this study was unable to demonstrate a protective parenting style associated with better transitions readiness and self-efficacy scores in adolescents with IBD. Within the context of authoritative parenting, we did find that females and older adolescents had higher transition readiness scores. Additional research into psychosocial determinants of transition readiness, and the importance of mul…

  • Measuring arterial blood pressure in humans

    Open Access•Gary D James, Linda M Gerber•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2018

Human biologists have been examining arterial blood pressure since they began studying the effects of the environment and culture on the health of diverse populations. The Korotkoff auscultatory technique with a trained observer and aneroid sphygmomanometer is the method of choice for blood pressure measurement in many bioanthropological field contexts. Korotkoff sounds (the first and fifth phases) are the preferred determinants of systolic and d…

  • Validity of self‐reported vitamin D deficiency among midlife A rab women living in Q atar

Open Access•Linda M Gerber, Ashley E Giambrone et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2016

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the level of agreement between self-reported vitamin D deficiency and serum vitamin D measured within the previous calendar year. METHODS: In a study in which serum 25(OH)D levels were retrieved from electronic health records, 523 women were asked whether they considered themselves to have vitamin D deficiency. Serum vitamin D levels were categorized as vitamin D deficiency if serum 25(OH)D was <20 ng/ml and as in…

  • Hypertension Prevalence in New York City Adults

    Ashley E Giambrone, Linda M Gerber et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2016

When analyzing racial/ethnic subgroups, NH Black and Hispanic adults from Dominican Republic had the highest HTN prevalence followed by South Asian and Puerto Rican adults. Mexican adults had the lowest prevalence of all groups. These findings highlight that ethnic subgroup differences go undetected when stratified by broader racial/ethnic categories. To our knowledge, this is the first population-based study using objective measures to highlight…

  • Results from the Trial Using Motivational Interviewing, Positive Affect, and Self-Affirmation in African Americans with Hypertension (TRIUMPH)

    Carla Boutin-Foster, Carla Boutin‐Foster et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2016

While this study did not demonstrate an intervention effect, it does provide important insight into the psychosocial factors that may underlie blood pressure control in African Americans. Implications for future behavioral intervention trials are discussed

  • Inaccuracy of self‐reported low sodium diet

    Open Access•Linda M Gerber, Samuel J Mann•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2012

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates how often the self-report of a low sodium (Na) intake is reflected by a low 24-h urinary sodium excretion and examines the influence of incomplete urinary collections on this comparison. METHODS: In a study in which 24-h urine collections were obtained for measurement of Na and creatinine excretion, 120 participants were asked whether their Na intake was low, medium, or high. A 24-h urine collection was considered…
