Colonial trade linkages: Trade policy and imports in South and Southeast Asia colonial markets (1874–1913)
Datos de investigación alojados en: https://doi.org/10.5281/ZENODO.13928128
Power politics and the expansion of US exports, 1879-1938
In this article, we present quantitative evidence for the first time of the effect of US power politics on the expansion of its export market from the late nineteenth century to the eve of the Second World War. Like other empires, US imperial policy was expressed through annexation, gunboat policies, and asymmetrical trade agreements. We find that US exports to territories that became colonies or protectorates and those involved in other US milit…
Trade in the shadow of power: Japanese industrial exports in the interwar years
During the interwar years, Japanese industrialization accelerated alongside the expansion of industrial exports to regional markets. Trade blocs in the interwar years were used as an instrument of imperial power to foster exports and as a substitute for productivity to encourage industrial production. The historiography on Japanese industrialization in the interwar years describes heavy industries' interests in obtaining access to wider markets t…
World Trade, 1800-1938: A New Synthesis
This paper outlines the development of world trade from 1800 to 1938. It relies on a newly compiled database, which, unlike previous works (e.g. Lewis 1981), reports series of imports and exports at current and constant prices and at current and constant (1913) borders for almost all existing polities. In the first sections, we outline the estimation methodology and assess the reliability of the series (now available at http://www.uc3m.es/tradehi…
Mexico’s Foreign Trade in a Turbulent Era (1821-1870): A Reconstruction
In 1821 Mexico achieved its independence from Spain. What happened in the following 50 years has become a field of dispute for economic historians. The lack of reliable quantitative information in many fields of economic activity has led to contrasting interpretations, none of which has been accepted as definitive. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the yearly values of Mexico’s foreign trade in that period, with the purpose of providing ele…
The Reconstruction of Brazil’s Foreign Trade Series, 1821-1913
To date, research on the economic history of Brazil during the 19 th century has relied on official foreign trade statistics, the accuracy of which has repeatedly been put into question. This paper provides insights into the accuracy of the official series by examining the accuracy of the export and import series for Brazil during the 19 th century. We re-estimate the official import series using trading partner sources, and find that the officia…
Lewis revisited: Tropical Polities Competing on the World Market, 1830-1938
Since the seminal work by W. A. Lewis, exports of primary products have been deemed the main or sole source of growth in tropical countries before the Great Depression. However, this conventional wisdom relies on very limited evidence. This article analyses the growth of exports with a constant market share analysis for 84 tropical polities. Exports grew a lot, but less than total trade, while relative prices of tropical products remained roughly…
Brazilian Export Growth and Divergence in the Tropics during the Nineteenth Century
The objective of this article is to reappraise both the accuracy of the official export statistics and the narrative of Brazilian export growth during the period immediately following independence. We undertake an accuracy test of the official values of Brazilian export statistics and find evidence of considerable under-valuation. Once corrected, during the post-independence decades (1821-50) Brazil's current exports represented a larger share of…
Uruguay and the First Globalization: On the Accuracy of Export Performance, 1870-1913
In order to understand Uruguay’s long-run economic evolution it becomes crucial to interpret its export performance during the First Globalization. The lack of accuracy of official figures, especially official prices used, calls for an adjustment of Uruguayan export series. We have used empirical evidence to test the accuracy of quantities and values of export records, first, according to import partners’ records and, second, according to interna…
On the Accuracy of Export Growth in Argentina, 1870–1913
Argentine export growth before the First World War is considered one of the most relevant variables in order to understand the main characteristics of Argentina's long-run modern economic growth properly. The lack of accuracy of the official export series, especially the relative official values used, lies behind some of the controversies and doubts of the historiography when addressing the causes and consequences of Argentina's international con…
How Much Trade Liberalization Was There in the World Before and After Cobden-Chevalier
The Cobden-Chevalier Treaty of 1860 is regarded as central turning point in nineteenth-century trade policy, inaugurating a free trade era in Western Europe. We reexamine this story and put it into global perspective with a new database covering more than 7,500 data points for 11 categories of manufactures in 41 countries and colonies around the world between 1846 and 1880. It reveals that bilateralism after 1860 reinforced a process already unde…
Réplica a Sabaté y Pardos

On the accuracy of foreign trade statistics (1909–1935): Morgenstern revisited
