La causalidad del motor inmóvil de Aristóteles en el joven Franz Brentano
In his second book, The Psychology of Aristotle, Franz Brentano added an appendix on the causality of God according to Aristotle. In previous pages, he had argued that the active intellect is part of the human soul, which is a spiritual substance. Since something spiritual cannot be originated in a physical way, each soul is created directly by God. Brentano knew that many interpreters of his time, especially Eduard Zeller, not only did not accep…
Beauty in Petrus Hispanus’s Commentary on De Divinis Nominibus
Although an edition of Petrus Hispanus’ commentary on Pseudo-Dionysius’ De divinis nominibus has long been available, his contribution to the pivotal question of beauty—so extensively explored by medieval commentators on this treatise—has remained virtually unnoticed. This article seeks to address that lacuna by examining the principal passages devoted to beauty, primarily in Chapter 4, where Pseudo-Dionysius’s presents God as subsistent beauty a…
Fate in Ancient Greek Philosophy and Religion
The Greek term heimarménē, rendered in Latin as fatum and in English as “fate” (and occasionally as “destiny”), designates one of the doctrinal elements at the intersection of Greek religion and philosophy [...]
Exegetical practices in the School of Salamanca
This article examines the interpretation of the Pauline Epistles within the intellectual milieu of sixteenth-century Salamanca, understood as a continuation and transformation of medieval exegetical culture. Focusing on figures commonly associated with the School of Salamanca—Francisco de Vitoria, Melchor Cano, Domingo de Soto, Domingo Báñez, and Fray Luis de León—the study analyses how Pauline exegesis functioned at the intersection of scholasti…
Nemesius of Emesa on Fate
This paper analyses the section of Nemesius of Emesa's treatise On the Nature of Man dedicated to fate. The main objective is to analyse Nemesius's response to the supporters of a notion of fate within the framework of astral determinism, Stoicism, and Middle Platonism. Following a mainly descriptive method, the paper focuses on Nemesius's own thought and not just on his treatment of his sources, as much of the existing literature has done until …

Pedro De Ledesma Contra La Premoción Moral De Juan Vicente De Astorga
Philosophical Reflection on Beauty in the Late Middle Ages
The late Middle Ages witnessed a recapitulation of medieval reflection on beauty. Jean Gerson is an important representative of these philosophical and theological contributions, although he has been largely neglected up to this time. A first dimension of his ideas on beauty is the incorporation of beauty (pulchrum) into the number of transcendentals, i.e., the concepts "convertible" with the notion of being (ens), that is, unity, truth, and good…
Parmenides as a Thinker of Fate
Although some ancient sources relate Parmenides to the religious doctrine of fate, this concept is not usually prominent in the scholarly presentation of the Eleatic thinker. Here, we offer a tentative interpretation of the notion of necessity in Parmenides' poem, as a peculiar philosophical understanding of the presence of fate in reality. Necessity, divinised by Parmenides, implies that all things are bound together by the chains of fate. There…

A Thomistic Account of Human Free Will and Divine Providence
Pedro de Ledesma is one of the Dominican theologians of the School of Salamanca involved in the De Auxiliis controversy, i.e., the disputes around a famous book by Luis de Molina on the relation between divine foreknowledge and providence and our free will. Studying an unpublished manuscript by Ledesma and his 1611 book on this subject, the article shows that he opposed Molina with a Thomistic position that we call deflationary. According to this…
Proclaiming the Divine Logos to the Man of the Future
This paper studies the cooperation of theology in the new evangelization in societies of ancient Christian tradition which are suffering an advanced process of secularization. It begins with Spain, where a recent debate on the influence of Christian intellectuals on social life suggests the ineffectiveness of ecclesiastical resources in transmitting the rich Catholic doctrinal heritage. Then the author deals with the idiosyncrasy of contemporary …
Contingency, Free Will, and Particular Providence
The results from contemporary science, especially the theory of evolution and quantum physics, seem to favor process theology. Moreover, the evil committed by free will leads some theologians to reduce divine action in order to prevent God from being responsible for evil. Thus, among those who defend a particular providence, Molinism finds many followers. This article first argues that contemporary science does not constrain us to deny particular…
La dialéctica y la metafísica según santo Tomás de Aquino
In these pages the author intends to examine the idea, quite widespread among Aristotle’s recent scholars, that the method of metaphysics were mainly dialectical. This problem is investigated in Aquinas, who decidedly denies that metaphysics uses dialectics because it just provides probability. Metaphysics, unlike dialectics, is not only based on the being of reason but also on the natural being. Therefore, it does not simply constitute a rationa…
