Diaphasic intralingual translation of neoclassical compounds in the field of medicine
This article investigates a borderline case between inter- and intralingual translation , viz. the interregisterial rewriting of Greek-derived English medical terms into plain-language wordings for lay readers. Applying the well-known coupled-pairs method , the investigation charts the different types of micro- and macrostrategies observable in this particular type of translation. Since the ST medical terms sampled are all one-word items, microst…
Translation of medical concepts in West-East knowledge transmission in nineteenth century China
This study explores translation shifts in medical knowledge transmission in nineteenth-century China, through a perspective focused on grammatical metaphor observed in a parallel corpus of medical texts. It uncovers the role of de-nominalization encoded in noun-to-verb or noun-to-adjective shifts in the translation process. Further, such linguistic shifts may be viewed as cultural adaptations necessary for the smooth transmission of disciplinary …
Intralingual translation in didactic practice
This article is a qualitative study charting the dimensional range of a particular type of translative phenomenon, namely, intralingual translation within educational practice. Theoretically, the article is based on a broadened concept of translation that encompasses any kind of sign translation, including the transcending of a language-internal comprehension barrier, such as the one between scientific and lay linguistic registers. Further, the a…
Transformational strategies in diaphasic translation
This article is concerned with a special case of translation, namely the registerial transformation of specialized LSP discourse into lay-oriented texts. This type of rewriting is intralingual mostly, but may also occur in combination with an interlingual element. Since previous research has mainly been concerned with one specific genre (Patient Information Leaflets as products of registerial rewriting), the present study investigates and compare…
The Heterogeneity of Intralingual Translation
The aim of this article is to contribute to the establishment of a sub-field of translation studies, namely a sub-field devoted to the research of intralingual translation. The article's contribution to this project is both theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part of the article, an already existing, five-partite typology of intralingual translation is reviewed and on certain points refined. The empirical part is taken up by three case …
Intralingual Translation and Its Place within Translation Studies – A Theoretical Discussion
Roman Jakobson’s tripartite typology of translation is accepted by many translation scholars as a broad definition of translation and is frequently included in the beginning of textbooks introducing Translation Studies. However, when it comes to the research carried out within Translation Studies, focus is overwhelmingly set on interlingual translation, or translation proper. A few scholars explicitly argue against the inclusion of intralingual a…
