  • Towards the Wind

    Open Access•V V Maroshi•ARTICLE•Critique and Semiotics•2025

The article focuses on the role of the northeast as a geographical direction in the history of the Russian frontier as well as on the symbolism of the northeast wind. These geopoetic motifs are present in Maximilian Voloshin’s poem “Severovostok,” in V. Kaverin’s novel “Two Captains,” and in the paratext and libretto of the modern Russian musical “Nord-Ost,” which is based on the novel. The article analyzes the contexts of the northeast wind’s mo…

    Open Access•Valery Maroshi, V V Maroshi•ARTICLE•Studies in Theory of Literary…•2021

The article examines the role of the opposition of “one’s own” and “someone else’s” in modern Russian prose – in V. Rasputin’s novel “Ivan’s Daughter, Ivan’s Mother” (2003), A. Volos’ novels “Khurramabad” (2000), V. Medvedev’s “Zahhok” (2017) and V. Galaktionova’s “On the Island of Buyan” (2003). The actualization of this opposition is due to the traumatic effect of the post-Soviet reality both in Russia and on the national outskirts of the forme…

  • Gothic beetle

    Valery Maroshi, V V Maroshi•ARTICLE•Sibirskii Filologicheskii Zhurnal•2020

It is syntactically and rhythmically highlighted in the text of the stanza. V. V. Nabokov was the first to try to set the origin of the character from English literature. The closest meaning of the allusion was a reference to V. A. Zhukovsky, with his surname associated with the beetle by its etymology and the appearan…

  • With an Icon and a Knife

    Open Access•Valery Maroshi, V V Maroshi•ARTICLE•Critique and Semiotics•2020

The article deals with semiotics of the vandal action of Abram Balashov in Tretyakov gallery aimed at the damaging Iliya Repin’s painting “Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on 14 November 1581”. We compared two acts of Russian vandals who attacked the canvas on 1913 and on 2018. There is considerable difference between Igor Podporin’s reckless ideological action and Balashov’s actions which were carefully planned. Balashov was an icon painter, b…
