Freedom and Unfreedom in the Russian Empire in the Debate between Chicherin and Rennenkampf at the End of the Nineteenth Century
This article treats the polemic between the conservative-liberal Boris Chicherin and Nikolai Rennnenkampf on the Polish and Jewish questions. Some portions of the exchange appeared in legal, and others in clandestine editions. The initial critical encounter between them in the early 1880s was an abstract debate about the metaphysical grounding of rights. But already at that time, the two opponents raised the fundamental question as to whether Rus…

Andreas Schönle and Andrei Zorin. On the Periphery of Europe, 1762–1825
Andreas Schönle and Andrei Zorin’s On the Periphery of Europe, 1762–1825: The Self-Invention of the Russian Elite is an analytical overview of Europeanization in Russia. Unlike most previous studies, it focuses neither on state initiatives nor on imitation of European ideas, but rather on the Russian elite’s emotions, practices, and perceptions under the influence of Europeanization. The “elite” in question is a small group of Russian nobles—weal…
The Nature of Entrustment
This groundbreaking book addresses issues of the keenest interest to anthropologists, specialists on Africa, and those concerned with international aid and development. Drawing on extensive research among the Luo people in western Kenya and abroad over many years, Parker Shipton provides an insightful general ethnography. In particular, he focuses closely on nonmonetary forms of exchange and entrustment, moving beyond anthropology’s traditional u…
A History of Russian Philosophy 1830–1930
The great age of Russian philosophy spans the century between 1830 and 1930 - from the famous Slavophile-Westernizer controversy of the 1830s and 1840s, through the 'Silver Age' of Russian culture at the beginning of the twentieth century, to the formation of a Russian 'philosophical emigration' in the wake of the Russian Revolution. This volume is a major history and interpretation of Russian philosophy in this period. Eighteen chapters (plus a …

Peasant Emancipation and Russian Social Thought
The problem of abolishing serfdom preoccupied Russian social thinkers long before the Emancipation in 1861. In spite of more than a century of scholarship devoted to analyzing the peasant question, however, historians have reached no consensus on such fundamental issues as the origins and political implications of abolitionist thought. Did advocacy of peasant emancipation by members of the landed nobility spring from liberal altruism or from a se…

Portrait of an Elite
In his short sketch, "Hamlet of the Shchigrovsky District," Ivan Turgenev imagined the provincial marshal of the nobility to be "a man of unrestrained and dignified expression entirely in keeping with his starched shirt-front, infinitely broad waistcoat, and round snuffbox full of French tobacco." For Turgenev and many contemporaries, the marshal's studied pomposity and ostentatious cosmopolitanism signified the overweening social pretension and …

The Crisis in Russian Agriculture
Not long ago Randolph Starn observed that the word "crisis" is a particularly ambiguous term which historians have not always used with the requisite care. "One historian's crisis lasts moments, another's decades, even eras; political, social, economic, mental, or moral crises are blurred by one historian's insistence on treating them discretely, while another lumps them together under the confusing rubric 'general crisis.' " Starn's strictures a…
