High-resolution radiocarbon and OSL cross-dating of Late Pleniglacial to Early Holocene aeolian succession and wildfire dynamics at the Łaskarzew site, eastern Poland
The chronology of Late Glacial and Early Holocene dune formation and wildfire activity at the Łaskarzew site, eastern Poland, was reconstructed using a combination of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating ( 14 C) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. The stratigraphic profile records 13 aeolian-soil cycles, characterized by alternating phases of aeolian deposition, soil formation, and wildfire episodes, reflecting t…

An Impact of Short-Term Climate Oscillations in the Late Pleniglacial and Lateglacial Interstadial on Sedimentary Processes and the Pedogenic Record in Central Poland
Environmental studies based on analyses of fluvio-aeolian successions with paleosols in central Poland, forming the central part of the European Sand Belt, are presented. Paleogeographic reconstruction was based on high-resolution analyses of four sites using sedimentological and paleopedological methods as well as forty-four optically stimulated luminescence and fourteen radiocarbon dating measurements. Age-identified individual lithological and…
Stratigraphy of the Late Glacial and Holocene aeolian series in different sedimentary zones related to the Last Glacial maximum in Poland
Reinterpretation of Fluvial-Aeolian Sediments From Last Glacial Termination Classic Type Localities Using High-Resolution Radiocarbon Data From the Polish Part of the European Sand Belt
This paper presents 66 radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates obtained at 33 key sites from the Polish part of the European Sand Belt. These calibrated dating results were compared to 34 high-resolution 14 C dates obtained from a fluvial-aeolian sediments to identify pedogenic phases from the late Pleniglacial interval to the early Holocene. These identified pedogenic phases were correlated with Greenland ice-core records, revealing high sensitivity of the fl…

Recovering Classical Philosophy in the Modern Context: The Work of Francis Slade
Francis Slade's spoken words and his writings are concrete and realistic: in their arresting formulations, their close reading and juxtaposition of texts, their use of literature and art, their insights into classical political philosophy, and their understanding of Christian faith. This article illustrates these features by examining three contrasts he develops in his work. First, the distinction between ends and purposes helps recover the class…

Phenomenology of the Human Person
In this book, Robert Sokolowski argues that being a person means to be involved with truth. He shows that human reason is established by syntactic composition in language, pictures, and actions and that we understand things when they are presented to us through syntax. Sokolowski highlights the role of the spoken word in human reason and examines the bodily and neurological basis for human experience. Drawing on Husserl and Aristotle, as well as …
What is Natural Law?: Human Purposes and Natural Ends
The Thomist 68 (2004): 507-29 WHAT IS NATURAL LAW? HUMAN PURPOSES AND NATURAL ENDS ROBERT SOKOLOWSKI The Catholic University ofAmerica Washington, DC ETHICS IN GENERAL, and medical ethics in particular, are obviously related to human self-understanding, to what we could call philosophical and theological anthropology. Our understanding of what is ethical and unethical is connected to what we take ourselves to be. The relationship, however, is not…

Syntax, Semantics, and the Problem of the Identity of Mathematical Objects
A plurality of axiomatic systems can be interpreted as referring to one and the same mathematical object. In this paper we examine the relationship between axiomatic systems and their models, the relationships among the various axiomatic systems that refer to the same model, and the role of an intelligent user of an axiomatic system. We ask whether these relationships and this role can themselves be formalized

Acquiring the Philosophical Habit
“The finest outcome of a theological education would be the formation of a preacher or a teacher who spontaneously thinks in this way: someone who appreciates the nuances, contours, definitions, and shapes of important human things and can articulate them clearly; someone who has philosophical understanding, and who can also place these natural things into the light that revelation can bring to them; someone who can bring out the further truth th…

The god of faith and reason: Foundations of Christian theology
How is it that Christian faith can be said to be in accordance with reason and at the same time to transcend reason? On the one hand, the concordance of faith with reason appears to reduce faith to rational thinking and to natural human experience; on the other hand, the difference between faith and reason seems to make belief unreasonable and arbitrary. In The God of Faith and Reason, Robert Sokolowski treats this theological difficulty not by s…

Matter, Elements and Substance in Aristotle ROBERT SOKOLOWSKI IN AmSTOrL]~'S PHILOSOPHY, are the simple bodies, earth, air. fire and water, substances? Are they composed of substantial form and matter? What serves as the formal dimension for such bodies, and what kind of "'primary" matter underlies it7 In the be~nning of his analysis of substance in Metaphy~:,rVII # 2, Aristotle writes: "Substance seems to occur most clearly in bodies (and so we …
