The Nature and Functions of Synesthesia in Music
The author considers the phenomenon of synesthesia, defining it as intersensory association formed by similarity or “contiguity” of heteromodal perceptions. The results of this associative process (occurring mainly at the subconscious level), when coming to the light of consciousness, may be fixed either in verbal form or directly in the sensuous material of the nonverbal arts (most significantly music). Synesthesia calls forth such notions as “m…

Mikhail Matyushin's Contribution to Synthetic Art
The author explores the pioneering ideas and experiments that the Russian musician and artist Mikhail Matyushin (1861–1934) contributed to the theory and practice of synthetic art. Special emphasis is placed on light art, light music and Matyushin's reflections on analogies between visual and performance art and on synesthesia. The article adduces some new facts, taken mainly from Russian sources not readily accessible to Western researchers. Alt…

Was Scriabin a Synesthete
This survey and summary of documentary material on Scriabin's "color hearing" is being presented for consideration by researchers studying his ideas of light-music synthesis. On the basis of their analysis, the authors conclude that the nature of Scriabin's "color-tonal" analogies was associative, i.e. psychological; accordingly, the existing belief that Scriabin was a distinctive, unique "synesthete" who really saw the sounds of music-that is, l…

Russian Conference on Computer Art
The concert ended with a performance by Audio-Gruppe from Berlin, directed by Benoit Maubrey. The performance was of the eccentric genre of interactive art: ballerinas wore plastic tutus embedded with a variety of electronic circuits (amplifiers with microphones, walkie-talkies, digital memory devices, photosensors and so on). The tutus picked up noises and voices from the environment. Audio signals were transformed in accordance with a preset rh…

"The Fire of "Prometheus: Music-Kinetic Art Experiments in the USSR
In this article, the author discusses the principal Soviet experiments in music–kinetic art. As can be judged from the available literature, most of these experiments still remain ‘blank spaces’ for Western readers. This article testifies to the existence of long-standing traditions that have inspired the Soviet school of music-kinetic art and have contributed to its original features. Perhaps the results have not always been as successful or as …

Ars Electronica in the International and Soviet Versions
Although I have been engaged in the practical and theoretical investigation of the interrelationships between art, science and technology for almost 30 years, the 1989 Ars Electronica festival in Linz was the first time I actually participated in an international exhibition of that kind. Moreover, the expression 'for the first time' also describes my visit to Austria as a country where 'capitalism reigns', to use the Soviet press terminology of t…
Music-Kinetic Art Medium: On the Work of the Group 'Prometei' (SKB), Kazan, U.S.S.R
The author describes the work of the Group ‘Prometei’ (SKB) at Kazan, U.S.S.R. on combining kinetic electric light art with music since the founding of the Group in 1962. Public performances have been given in which the motion and the colour of projected light images were manually controlled in an attempt to correlate them with either the individual qualities or the themes or with both of these aspects of music. The Group believes that the manual…

"The New "Laokoon: A Periodic System of the Arts
The title of this article reflects the author’s attempts to systematize the arts in their present forms, thereby accommodating the series of ‘technical arts’ that are being added to the system of traditional art forms. The author suggests an original method of classifying the arts that makes it possible to simultaneously graph both the expanding ‘universe of the arts’ and the centripetal tendencies that characterize the integrity of the arts syst…
Musical-Kinetic Art in the USSR
The author provides a theoretical analysis of the exhibition and the show program at the Light and Music festival held 20–30 September 1987, in Kazan, USSR. He considers problems of art, science and technology, with special reference to musical-kinetic art, in Russia and the Soviet Union since the beginning of the twentieth century. Attention is devoted to nontraditional, experimental artistic forms that make active use of modern technology. Conc…
