  • The “National Amnesia” in the Traditional History of Iran: Dedicated to Professor Jürgen von Ungern-Sternberg on his 80th birthday

    Gregor Schoeler•ARTICLE•Der Islam•2020

It is well known that the pre-Islamic “national history” of Iran (i. e., the indigenous secular historical tradition, transmitted orally over many centuries) knows nothing at all, or as good as nothing, about the dynasties and empires of the Medes, Achaemenids, Seleucids, and Parthians (ca. 700 BCE–226 CE). It is first with the Sasanians (226‒651 CE) that Iran’s “national history” evinces more detailed knowledge. Instead of reports on the histori…

  • The Theories on the Origin of the Andalusian Arabic Stanzaic Poetry—Revisited

    Gregor Schoeler•ARTICLE•Oriens•2016

On the question of the origin of the two Andalusian Arabic genres of stanzaic poetry, muwashshaḥ and zajal, there is a large degree of consensus at present: they are further developments of the Eastern Arabian musammaṭ, a simpler form of stanzaic poetry. An origin in Romance forms is assumed at present only by few researchers. The objective of the first part of this article is to give substantial evidence for the validity of the ‘Arabic theory’. …

  • Tilman Nagels „ ‚Authentizität‘ in der Leben-Mohammed-Forschung“. Eine Antwort

    Gregor Schoeler•ARTICLE•Asiatische Studien – Études…•2014

This contribution is a response to Tilman Nagel's essay “ ‘Authentizität’ in der Leben-Mohammed-Forschung” [‘Authenticity’ in the research on the Life of Mohammed] in which the author again presents the main theses argued in his monograph Mohammed. Leben und Legende and responds to criticism. Whereas his critics agree with Nagel that complete ‘authenticity’ is unattainable in principle, yet an asymptotic approximation of Mohammed as a figure is i…

  • The ‘Poetic Syllogism’ Revisited

    Gregor Schoeler•ARTICLE•Oriens•2013

The term ‘poetic syllogism’ appears in the late antique Greek commentary and scholia literature. Arabic philosophers, however, are the first to explain how this kind of syllogism is constructed; al-Fārābī introduces one type and Avicenna adds two more. Each syllogism that follows one of these three types includes among its premises or its conclusion at least one figurative statement. The poetic syllogism plays a key role in Arabic ‘philosophical’…

  • First Century Sources for the Life of Muḥammad? A Debate

Andreas Görke, Harald Motzki et al.•ARTICLE•Der Islam•2012

In a recent issue of Der Islam, Stephen R. Shoemaker has contributed an extensive article in which he challenged the processes and findings of a number of studies conducted by Gregor Schoeler, Harald Motzki, and Andreas Görke. The following article offers a response to his findings. Whereas the three authors argued the case for the possibility that authentic traditions of the first century of the Hijra can be reconstructed, Shoemaker holds the co…

  • The Transmission and Dynamics of the Textual Sources of Islam: Essays in Honour of Harald Motzki

Carmen Becker, Herbert Berg et al.•BOOK•Transmission and Dynamics of the…•2011

For many Muslims, the textual sources of Islam provide the guiding principles on which they base their beliefs. These texts have also been studied by Western scholars of Islam for centuries. Most of their work has focussed on the historicity of the texts, often at the expense of the study of Muslims' highly diverse interpretation and application of these sources in everyday life. This volume provides new insights into the transmission of these so…

  • The Oral and the Written in Early Islam

Gregor Schoeler, Uwe Vagelpohl et al.•BOOK•Oral and the Written in Early Islam•2006

Made up of a number of seminal articles that are translated for the first time in English, this prestigious book from Gregor Schoeler gives a reasoned, informed and comprehensive overflow of how the written and the spoken interacted, diverged and received cultural articulation among the Muslim societies of the first two centuries of the Hijra.

  • The Poetic Syllogism according to al-Fārābī: An Incorrect Syllogism of the Second Figure

Open Access•Maroun Aouad, Gregor Schoeler•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2002

It is well-known that the Arab philosophers of the Aristotelian tradition, like some of their Alexandrian predecessors, attached rhetoric and poetics to logic, and supported this inclusion by the idea that the principal poetic procedure - that is, essentially, metaphor - is a kind of syllogism: the poetic syllogism. However, until now, no texts prior to those of Avicenna had been identified which render the structure of this syllogism explicit. I…
