Language Input, Phonological Properties, Lexical-Semantic Knowledge, and English Past Tense Production in Dual Language Learners
Purpose: This preliminary study explored patterns of English past tense production, in 10 Spanish-L1-English-L2 dual language learners (DLLs), predicted by Bybee’s usage-based Network Model (NM). Methodology: DLLs completed the Test of Early Grammatical Impairment and the semantic and morphosyntax subtests from the Bilingual English-Spanish Assessment (BESA). The Paradis corpus was employed, as a representative corpus, to index English language i…
Inner Speech and Language Choice Among Bilingual Adults: A Scoping Review of Methods and Applications
Introduction: Background: Inner speech, or the “little voice in the head,” is implicated in many cognitive functions and is gaining interest in interdisciplinary research. Inner speech in bilinguals, people who speak more than one language proficiently, may shed light on the underlying mechanisms of language and cognitive function in the brain. Objectives: We aim to examine the research on inner speech in bilingual adults and the methods used in …
A preliminary study of the relationship between working memory, language experience, and grammatical skill in dual language learners
Purpose: This study examined the relationship between verbal short-term and working memory, language experience, and English tense-marking skill in Spanish L1-English L2 dual language learners (DLLs). Methodology: Ten Spanish-English DLLs, in kindergarten and first grade, participated in the study. Children completed the Test of Early Grammatical Impairment, a narrative retell task in English, and verbal memory tasks. Parents provided information…
The Keepers: An Introduction to the History and Culture of the Samaritans
Keepers describes the remarkable history and survival of the Samaritans and the unique oppression and grace that have shaped their culture and religion. It is a history whose antagonists have included Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and it has contributed to arguments between Roman Catholics and Protestants over the text of the Bible. The threads of the story disappear at times into Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, but ultimately succeed in affir…
Lexical morphology and verb use in child first language loss: A preliminary case study investigation
In this paper, preliminary longitudinal data on the effects of first language loss on verb inflection and use by two Spanish-speaking siblings who were in an English-speaking environment were gathered. Both children were followed for approximately two years and were video-recorded while interacting with a familiar Spanish-speaking adult. Spontaneous Spanish speech samples were used to monitor patterns of L1 loss in the children's use of verbal le…
Loss of Gender Agreement in L1 Attrition: Preliminary Results
The purpose of the present investigation was to obtain preliminary data on the effects of first language (LI) loss on the Spanish of bilingual children, particularly with respect to noun phrase (NP) gender agreement. Two children, bilingual in English and Spanish, were followed longitudinally and their use of gender agreement was examined. Data on incidence and type of NP gender agreement errors were obtained. Results of the investigation suggest…
Phonological development of two-year-old monolingual Puerto Rican Spanish-speaking children
Phonetic and phonological analyses were performed on spontaneous speech samples of six 2–year–old monolingual Puerto Rican Spanish-learning children. The analyses showed a number of patterns of sound usage similar to those found in English-learning children of the same age, as well as children from other linguistic backgrounds. These findings add support to the claim that certain universal patterns exist in phonological development. However, a nu…

Medicine, Chiropractic and Caste
The antagonisms that separate orthodox medicine from chiropractic are customarily explained in terms of clinical and biomedical disagreements. Caste theory and the concept of cultural differentiation, however, provide an alternative explanation which accounts for the pattern of chiropractic upward mobility, for certain shortcomings in chiropractic education, and for one area of clinical and research inadequacy in medicine
The Politics of Music in Nepal
The cultural interface of the West with the Valley of Kathmandu is examined as a problem in musical acculturation in which borrowing or failure to borrow is a matter, in the first instance, of cultural politics. By enforcing governmental regulations, Western popular music is kept from most of the Valley population, but not from the educated young elite. By way of this exception, it appears that the rest of the population may eventually acculturat…

Voluntary Associations in History
Formal common interest associations appear to have become prominent during the neolithic, but to have declined subsequently in preindustrial nations. The industrial revolution supported a new proliferation. With this, the mode of operation changed: associations came to unite on the basis of rational-legal sanctions. Modern voluntary associations may contribute to social stability as adaptive mechanisms for traditional institutions. They may socia…

The Indirect Social Structure of European Village Communities 1
From Mafia to Cosa Nostra
The old Mafia of Sicily was a pre-industrial peasant institution. Its organization was intimate and diffuse. It now operates in the highly urbanized and industrialized milieu of the United States. As an urban, industrial institution it has envolved into a different kind of organization. The real and fictive kinship ties of the old Mafia are still utilized among fellow Sicilians and Italians. But these ties are now subordinate to bureaucratic ones…
Voluntary Associations and Urbanization a Diachronic Analysis
Recent studies of membership show that the role of voluntary associations in urbanization is less prominent than previously thought. In the present paper the growth and decline of the social institutions of an urbanized Danish community are measured in terms of corporate identity. It is found that, when the total social structure is thus used frame of reference, voluntary associations show preeminence in mobilizing social forces which is shared o…

The present paper is an effort in this direction. Limited to data obtained from library research plus …

Dating Reindeer Pastoralism in Lapland
The origin of reindeer breeding has been the subject of much intensive and often heated discussion among Lapp scholars. Yet, not until 1933 with the publication of the Norwegian judge and man of letters Erik Solem's Lappiske Rettsstudier was it clearly demonstrated that the origins of reindeer breeding and the beginning of full-scale pastoralism in Lapland are two distinct problems. From an ethnological viewpoint the distinction is notable; socio…

Changing Social Stratification in a Danish Village
In his research on class, Warner has been criticized for not separating more definitively the various dimensions of social stratification, and specifically for merging economic and prestige hierarchies (Mills, 1942, 264-265). It has, however, never seriously been challenged that a very salient relationship does exist between the two categories. In the following pages we record what happened to the class structure of a Danish village when its mari…

Eskimo Reindeer Herding: A Problem in Applied Anthropology
This paper is concerned with the traceable development of reindeer herding practices in Alaska since 1892, and with the sociocultural implications, largely economic, entailed in the several and different methods of herding government-guided as well as spasmodic. For the purposes of elucidation on the pervasive cultural influences that can be effected with changes in patterns of reindeer domestication and surveillance, reindeer herding methods are…
