Culture as window dressing? A threefold methodological framework for researching the locality of Netflix series
Considering the implications of Netflix's role as a content producer for cultural diversity in Europe, this methodological article investigates how to define and measure the locality of Netflix Originals. We employ a threefold methodological study based on industry data analysis, audience reception research, and content analysis. This replicable and scalable methodological design provides a solid analytical framework for future studies examining …
Involving Users in Infrastructure Development: Methodological Reflections From the Research Pilot Projects Using the CLARIAH Media Suite
In this contribution we introduce a compilation of articles that reflect on the use of the CLARIAH Media Suite and its impact on research methods, as they were conducted during the CLARIAH research pilot projects (2017-18). The pilot projects fit in a co-development approach in which users are involved in infrastructure development from the start. We discuss how feedback of the pilot researchers was incorporated in the iterative development and t…
Mapping European Performing Arts Databases: An Inventory of Online Historical Theatre Data Projects
Over the last two decades, a growing number of databases have been published online that record historical information on the production, distribution and reception of performing arts. The aim of this contribution is to present a starting inventory of European performing arts databases that are available online, since no such overview exists to date
Post-observation conversations in the museum: Using the Self-Evaluation of the Supervisee as the Starting Point
Post-observation conversations are often used to discuss the quality of teaching and education; however, little is known about the use of this method for the evaluation of teaching in museums. Drawing on interviews, in the first research question, we explored how museum guides (n = 14) and educators (n = 8) perceived a post-observation conversation when they used the guide's self-evaluation as the starting point. This is in contrast to the educat…
Competent museum guides: Defining Competencies for Use in Art and History Museums
This study aimed to identify the competencies required for museum guides who lead tours of school students in art and history museums. We compiled a preliminary list of competencies from the literature and interviews with 16 Dutch museum guides and three educators. Next, the Delphi technique was used to validate the list of competencies. A total of 26 experts, consisting of 12 educators, 9 guides, and 5 teacher trainers, rated the importance of t…

Who Knows Television? Online Access and the Gatekeepers of Knowledge
This article investigates the implications of online access to television archival material and the knowledge it represents. I discuss the impact of digitisation on the TV archive, and ask how that affects the role of the archivist as a gatekeeper to its knowledge. I argue that far from being a gatekeeper, the archivist becomes an editor of data generated by various agents. The article also questions the impact of this development on the status o…
Dutch linguists between Humboldt and Saussure: The case of Jac. van Ginneken (1877-1945)
The impact Ferdinand de Saussure'sCours de linguistique générale(1916) had on Dutch linguistics in the 1930s and 1940s has not yet become the object of a thorough investigation. It can be pointed out, however, that in the interwar period Dutch reactions to theCourswere of a mixed character. When one finds Saussure's book referred to by leading Dutch linguists such as Etsko Kruisinga (1875-1944), H. J. Pos (1898-1955) and A. W. de Groot (1892-1963…

Women and grammar: The case of Johanna Corleva
In the 1740s Johanna Corleva, an Amsterdam sçavante, published two books, a grammar and a dictionary. The grammar, which appeared in 1740, is die first translation of the Grammaire générale et raisonnée (1660). Corleva 's Dutch-French dictionary, published in 1741, was set up « ad modum Lexici Schreveliani Graeci », i.e. it was modelled after Schrevelius's Lexicon Manuale Graeco-Latinum et Latino-Graecum, a manual of great renown that appeared in…

Hoogvliet Versus Van Ginneken: Dutch linguistics around the turn of the century
In the last two decades of the 19th century the Dutch linguist Jan Marius Hoogvliet (1860-1924) developed an individual approach to non-historical linguistics, in which he sought to take expressly into account data from non-Indo- European languages. His linguistic views prompted him to attack the ideas of the proponents of the 'world language' Volapük, which was popular in the Netherlands in the 1880s. In 1903 his major work, Lingua, appeared. Th…

A Few Remarks on Adam Smith's Dissertation (1761)
In 1761 Adam Smith (1723-90) published his Dissertation on the Origin of Languages. Erroneously scholars have thought that this essay appeared as a supplement to the second edition of Smith's book The Theory of Moral Sentiments of the same year; in fact it was only added to the third edition of that work (1767). Against Coseriu's opinion that Adam Smith must be considered as a pioneer of the typology of language, one can put forward that Smith's …
