  • The African Inheritance

    Ieuan Ll Griffiths•BOOK•African Inheritance•2005•Cited by: 4

Africa is a continent gripped by civil wars and widespread famine. The causes of many of the continent's problems are deep rooted and can be traced to Africa's colonial past, when European powers divided the spoils of the continent into separate sovereign states. The African Inheritance examines the effect this "balkanization" of Africa has had, and is having, on the political and economic well-being of the continent. From a brief history of pre-…

  • The Quest for Independent Access to the Sea in Southern Africa

    Ieuan Ll Griffiths•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1989•Cited by: 5•References: 3

The quest for independent access to the sea is an aspiration which dominates the geopolitics of Southern Africa. In 150 years of conflicting interests between the power in the south and those of the landlocked interior, control of access to the sea has been the principal means of asserting political domination. The conflict has survived change in the identity of both sets of powers and could well endure future changes. It has been a battle of geo…

  • The Scramble for Africa: Inherited Political Boundaries

    Ieuan Ll Griffiths, Ieuan Griffiths•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1986•Cited by: 29•References: 7

THE INHERITED POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY of Africa is as great an impediment to independent development as her colonially based economies and political structures. The colonial political geography derives from the Berlin Conference of 1884-85, which laid down the rules for the European partition of the continent. What were drawn as colonial boundaries have survived the transition from colonies to independent states and, more surprisingly, 25 years of Af…

D EVELOPMENT of mineral resources is one of the few shortcuts to economic growth available to developing countries. Thus the distribution of minerals and the locational patterns of their utilization are important elements of development geography. Physical and economic factors alone do not determine the pattern of mineral development; frequently, for instance, strategic considerations are decisive.
