One person one language
Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar as crenças sobre o bilinguismo que compõem o imaginário social do professor da educação bilíngue de elite em Curitiba (PR), a partir dos resultados de uma pesquisa qualitativa-interpretativista, realizada com duas profissionais da educação bilíngue da cidade. Foram conduzidas entrevistas semiestruturadas para gerar os dados e, então, categorias de análise foram definidas. A partir dos resultados, foram di…
“I think we don't have a really good way to talk about intelligibility”
In his influential paper, John Levis (2005) argued that pronunciation teaching is influenced by two conflicting ideologies: the nativeness principle, which suggests learners should strive to sound like native speakers, and the intelligibility principle, which emphasizes that learners should focus on being intelligible and developing speech patterns that are contextually appropriate. These two principles often clash, creating a conflict between te…
Effective learning begins with effective teaching
This article not only serves as the introduction to the special issue “Second language pronunciation: Learning, pedagogy, and teacher education,” but also as a space for the guest editors to reflect on the role of teacher cognition in second language pronunciation instruction. To this end, the authors conducted a comprehensive review of 14 articles on English teachers' cognition and pronunciation instruction published over the last decade. Select…
The Interplay between Language Proficiency and Phonological Development
The present study investigated the correlation between second-language (L2) proficiency and phonological development within a longitudinal frame. Five Brazilian learners of English participated in two data collection sessions with a seven-month interval. Participants completed a paragraph reading task containing several instances of two nasals and a rhotic coda in word-final position, namely, /m n ɹ/. Proficiency was measured via experienced Engl…
Second Language Speech
In the introduction to the thematic issue "Research agendas in second language speech: aquisition and pedagogy", the authors build an overview that encompasses theoretical models of L2 speech, the interrelation between segmentals and suprasegmentals with speech intelligibility and conclude by discussing issues related to pedagogical practices and teacher education
Alinhados a esses construt…
Orthographic effects in speech production
The present study inquired whether orthography affects phonological processing of English as an L2. To do so, a lexicon that simulated opaque and transparent grapho-phonic English relations in nuclear position was developed (e.g., keet, deit, toud). Bilingual speakers of Brazilian Portuguese and English were compelled to learn this new lexicon through a repeated-exposure training paradigm in which they were introduced to the lexicon phonological …
Orthographic Effects in Speech Perception
O presente estudo investigou efeitos ortográficos em uma tarefa de percepção da fala realizada por falantes brasileiros de inglês. O estudo empregou um léxico artificial que simulava relações grafo-fônicas opacas e transparentes do inglês em posição nuclear (deit, toud). Participantes aprenderam esse novo conjunto de palavras através de um paradigma de treinamento de exposição repetida, no qual foram inicialmente introduzidas formas fonológicas a…
Perception of Intonational Patterns and Speaker’s Intentionality in English Yes-No Questions Produced by Brazilians
O presente estudo investigou a percepção de diferentes padrões entoacionais e da intencionalidade do falante em perguntas interrogativas totais do inglês. Os falantes foram seis brasileiros que gravaram um diálogo. Os ouvintes foram 31 brasileiros de diferentes partes do país que realizaram um Teste de Percepção da Modalidade da Sentença e um Teste de Percepção da Intencionalidade. Três contornos diferentes foram testados: padrão do inglês americ…
Frequency Effects on the Intelligibility of English Words With High Front Vowels
The aim of the present study is to examine to what extent intelligibility scores, as measured through word transcription, correlate with lexical frequency and with listeners’ familiarity with the target words. 32 listeners from different language backgrounds had to orthographically transcribe ten missing target-words (all CVC words, five with the tense high front vowel and five with its lax counterpart), which were produced by Brazilian Portugues…
