F Is for Falcon
This article takes a closer look at the Boccaccio story upon which Paul Heyse based his famous ‘Falken‐Theorie’ of the ‘Novelle’. The essay then links Boccaccio to a general account of storytelling as an aid to survival amid the hostility of nature and human circumstances. The focus narrows down to the German ‘Novelle’, looking at Goethe (who adapted Boccaccio's genre for contemporary needs), the Romantics, Stifter and Freud. The development of t…
Kafka's ‘Die Verwandlung’ and the Condition of Subjectivity
Kafka's ‘Die Verwandlung’ is interpreted here as a (strictly impossible) unmediated representation of subjectivity. Franz Grillparzer's Novelle ‘Der arme Spielmannʼ provides the background to the argument that in Kafka's tale a spectator becomes the central element of a drama. The development of this drama is then compared with an Oedipus Complex experienced in reverse. By these means Kafka negates an historical condition of subjectivity, while p…
Modernism's Struggle for the Soul
Rainer Maria Rilke's Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge and Ingeborg Bachmann's Malina , despite their distance from one another in time and many other profound differences, are, it is argued here, comparable in that they both mimic the modern deformation of the soul in order to mount aesthetic opposition to it. Since the advent of postmodernism in the 1970s, this struggle for the soul belongs to the past. However, a structure of hope fo…
“Grass auseinandergeschrieben
The aim of this article is to contribute to an assessment of Grass's achievement as an artist in the condition of post‐war German democratic capitalism. Using the concept of Mimesis as it is developed by Adorno and Horkheimer in the Dialektik der Aufklärung , the article offers an analysis of Grass's neglected masterpiece Hundejahre , and attempts particularly to explain the peculiar and perplexing motif of scarecrows at its center. The results o…
Cultural Pleasure
Kafka's ‘Josefine die Sängerin oder Das Volk der Mäuse’
The first part of this article is a textual analysis of cultural pleasure as depicted in Kafka's ‘Josefine die Sängerin oder Das Volk der Mäuse’. There are two levels to this pleasure: the first, based on mutual misunderstanding, is that Josefine's performance mirrors the community's own vulnerability, which paradoxically enriches its sense of belonging, and this in turn confirms its ability to protect her to the extent that she can perform for t…
Fritz Lang's Metropolis
Fritz Lang's classic 1927 film Metropolis has justifiably become an icon for the complexities of Weimar culture. Among the important general issues it also raises are the relation between ideology and art, the status and authorship of the film text in the entertainment market, the city, the construction of gender, the relation between the human body and the machine in modernity, and the relation between mass and high culture. This volume provides…
Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and the United States
Fritz lang’s Metropolis (1927) has often been analysed in context of the Weimar Republic and in relation to National Socialism. This essay, while acknowledging the importance of those contexts, seeks to take a fresh look at the film in the context of the effects upon it of the United States. The film’s production, distribution and theme are all bound up in one way or another with the influence of the United States and these circumstances, the ess…
