Kafka's ‘Die Verwandlung’ is interpreted here as a (strictly impossible) unmediated representation of subjectivity. Franz Grillparzer's Novelle ‘Der arme Spielmannʼ provides the background to the argument that in Kafka's tale a spectator becomes the central element of a drama. The development of this drama is then compared with an Oedipus Complex experienced in reverse. By these means Kafka negates an historical condition of subjectivity, while pointing forward towards a future one.
