Power, Politics, and Society: An Introduction to Political Sociology
Power, Politics and Society: An Introduction to Political Sociology discusses how sociologists have organized the study of politics into conceptual frameworks, and how each of these frameworks foster a sociological perspective on power and politics in society. This includes discussing how these frameworks can be applied to understanding current issues and other "real life" aspects of politics. This second edition incorporates new material on cult…
Teaching and Learning Guide to Accompany Graffiti as a Form of Contentious Political Participation
The authors develop four exercises to further explore themes that are discussed in the Waldner and Dobratz article “Graffiti as a Form of Contentious Political Participation (Sociology Compass 7: 377–389),” including Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Madres de Plaza de Mayo), From Famous Political Speech (“Ich Bin Ein Berliner”) to Graffiti: “Ich bin Berliner”, “Protest, Violence, and Graffiti in Greek Politics,” and “Political Speech or Just Tagging…
Graffiti as a Form of Contentious Political Participation
Graffiti is a popular topic in the sociological, criminological, and linguistic literature with several book length treatments of various types of graffiti including tagging, gang graffiti, murals, and “bombings”. Yet, political sociologists have paid little attention to the role of graffiti as a form of contentious politics despite the often political nature of graffiti messages. As a result, most of the political research on graffiti is by non‐…
Repertoires of Contention: White Separatist Views on the Use of Violence and Leaderless Resistance
Particularly since the early 1990s, some white power movement leaders have advocated abandoning leader-led organizations in favor of leaderless resistance. We examine the events leading up to this call that illustrate how threat is intertwined with the adoption of leaderless resistance. Using a combination of interview and questionnaire data collected primarily from white power movement followers, we examine views on leaderless resistance as well…

What Happened on Ruby Ridge: Terrorism or Tyranny
In the 1992 Ruby Ridge, Idaho, incident during which U.S. Marshal William Degan and Sammy and Vicki Weaver were killed, law enforcement and the Weavers socially constructed each other's roles. We focus on how the framing of what happened on Ruby Ridge changed. Drawing on Gamson's (1968) discussion of law enforcement strategies, we suggest that certain federal agencies were challenged about the justness of their actions. The Weavers, white separat…

The Role of Religion in the Collective Identity of the White Racialist Movement
This paper applies the concept of identity to the white racialist or separatist movement, typically referred to as the white supremacist movement in many mainstream publications. While similar racial identity and shared perceptions of the meaning of racialism bind the movement together, there are other important concerns that potentially divide the movement but also have served to attract members to it. One of these potentially divisive areas, th…

Blindness Rehabilitation Agencies and Organizational Environments
Previous research has suggested that the extent to which rehabilitation agencies must compete over clientele affects the structure and behavior of organizations. Institutional theory suggests, however, that increased competition is unlikely to affect the rehabilitation process and client outcomes. In this paper, multiple regression analysis on survey data from 135 agencies in 22 states suggested that organizational structure and behavior were not…
Differences in Political Participation and Value Orientations Among Greek Men and Women
It is, of course, Aristotle who pointed out that “Man is by nature a political animal” (quotation taken from Lipset, 1981:vii). One could of course speculate whether he meant only the male half of the human species were political animals. It is, however, the case that men tend to participate more in politics than women. This particular study focuses upon men and women's political participation in Greece, the place many regard as the birthplace of…
Does Scandal Influence Voters' Party Preference? The Case of Greece During the Papandreou Era
The literature on corruption and scandals suggests that there is an unsettled issue concerning whether the public opinion of citizens is greatly influenced by reports of scandal and corruption. Recent developments in Greek politics provide an excellent empirical setting for the testing of how much influence scandals may have on party preference and voting. Toward the end of and after the controversial Papandreou administration in Greece (June 198…

An Examination of Social and Socio-Psychological Factors in Party Preferences: The Case of Greece
Two important traditions of research on the causes of voting preferences, one that stresses social variables and is associated with the University of Columbia and the other that examines current issues and is identified with the University of Michigan Survey Research Institute, are drawn upon to help provide an analysis of political party preference in Greece. Among the social variables used in the study, age is the only significant one. Issues r…

Electoral Voting Preferences and Political Orientations of Athenians in Greece: A Three‐Perspective Model
Using a three‐perspective model of stratification, group and issue‐oriented variables, an effort was made to examine the relevance of three perspectives in predicting voting behaviour among Athenians in Greece. The model was based on an analysis of 478 cases from data collected in Athens in the spring and summer of 1977. Pro‐Western attitudes and politics of friends were found to be the most important variables in predicting vote among the Atheni…

Political Power and Conventional Political Participation
In this review we will provide a partial overview and assessment of political sociology' by focusing on the literature on political power and political participation during the last five years or so. Lipset, the major protagonist of political sociology, laid its groundwork more than 20 years ago in his first edition of Political Man (1960). Since that classic book was published, political sociology has come of age. During the last 20 years, more …

Some correlates of partisan preference in Greece, 1980: A Discriminant Analysis
The factors underlying patterns of partisan preference in Greece have been the subject of fairly little systematic analysis. This article uses data from a 1980 Euro‐Barometer survey, the first to include a Greek sample, to outline the structure of the Greek partisan universe. A number of demographic variables – age, family income, education, occupation, sex, size of community, and household status – together with attitudinal variables regarding b…

Greece and Its Relations With the West: A Case Study of International Conflict
Papandreou and the Pan‐Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) are committed to bring about change in Greek society, but they must decide how much change, and how quickly that can be accomplished without hindering the party's chances for electoral victory. Data drawn from two separate surveys covering, respectively, relevance of three types of issues (foreign policy, civil liberties and economic policy) on the voting of Greeks, and Greek attitudes to…

Class Consciousness and Political Attitudes among Athenians
Using data collected in Athens, Greece in the spring of 1977, an effort was made to test the relationship between several objective socioeconomic indicators and subjective class perceptions and political attitudes. Our main concern was the effect of subjective class awareness and consciousness on selected political issues (pro-Western foreign policy, civil liberties, and economic conservatism) and voting. Our findings show that class and socioeco…

Teaching Complex Organizations: A Survey Essay
In this essay I briefly review six books that could be used as texts in teaching complex organizations. I began my quest for appropriate textbooks to review by examining a draft of Thomas Drabek's article, the Sociology of Complex Organizations, which also appears in this issue of Teaching Sociology. He identified six texts as excellent, but two of them were considerably dated (1979, 1981) and more recent editions were not available. In addition
