  • Political propaganda in Northeast and Southeast Asia: Seminar series on “State and Society in East Asia”, February‐May 2023, Université Libre de Bruxelles

Pierre Petit, Vanessa Frangville•ARTICLE•Journal des anthropologues•2023

The seminar series featured contributions focused on China, Japan, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand, with the aim of understanding how large-scale communication campaigns are organized (or were organized in the recent past) to influence local audiences and increase their engagement with current policies and ideologies. With the authoritarian turn and the militaristic developments occurring in much of East and Southeast Asia, addressing this topic seem…

  • Anthropology & Photography: Introduction

Open Access•Mikaëla Le Meur, Pierre Petit et al.•ARTICLE•Civilisations•2023•References: 34

The goal of this special issue of Civilisations is to explore the relationship between the anthropological project of understanding humankind and the practice of photography, in a continuation of the long-standing debate begun in the Anglophone world and continued more recently, in the Francophone world, by the journals Ethnologie française (2007) and Gradhiva (2018). Adopting a landscape format in full colour for the occasion to give visual cont…

  • Anthropologie & photographie: Introduction

    Open Access•Mikaëla Le Meur, Pierre Petit•ARTICLE•Civilisations•2023•References: 34

  • AfricaMuseum reopening Tervuren, Belgium

Elaine Sullivan, Elaine Ericksen Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•African Arts•2020•Cited by: 1

The reopening in December 2018 of the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA/MRAC), now also known as the AfricaMuseum, after five years of renovation (Fig. 1), has been a major event, not only in Belgium but way beyond its borders. Given the world wide celebrity of this interdisciplinary institution with its extraordinary collection of historical artifacts, I have considered it essential to solicit multiple voices and views. The commissioning of …

  • Emerging public space in rural Laos

    R Stolz, Pierre Petit•ARTICLE•Civilisations•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 32

While urban settings stand at the forefront in discussions about public spaces in socialist East- and Southeast Asia, rural public spaces in the region have been hitherto largely unexplored. Drawing on two different upland cases from the northern part of Laos, this contribution identifies local vernacular public spaces on the one hand, and emerging state-connected public spaces on the other. The latter will be argued to comprise: (1) state-contro…

  • Our Lady of Congo: The Creation and Reception of an Early Missionary Propaganda Devotion

    Pierre Petit•ARTICLE•Material Religion•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 17

In 1891, the founder of the Matadi mission commissioned a master sculptor in Ghent to create a neo-gothic Madonna and child with a kneeling, imploring African released from the shackles of slavery at the Virgin’s feet. “Our Lady of Congo” was expected by its creators to become the tutelary figure of the new colony. In Belgium, it was successfully used as missionary propaganda, notably by the Society for Congolese Children, a pious association set…

Prologue Picture a small, white-brick-walled café with bossa nova playing in the background, only a stone’s throw away from Shanghai’s famous shopping area Nanjing Road. Two elder women enter. From their enthusiastic tone and unembarrassed, loud voices as they interact with the staff, one can tell that they might be regulars, and most likely Shanghai-born. One of them orders a takeaway coffee, and shortly after, Fei, a rural migrant in his mid-tw…

  • Mobility and Stability in a Tai Vat Village (Laos)

    Pierre Petit•ARTICLE•Canberra Anthropology•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 6

This article explores how Tai highlanders experience mobility. The Tai Vat living in Houaphan Province, Laos, first fled Vietnam at the end of the nineteenth century, and again during the First Indochina War. They presently engage in migrations to rural areas of the Mekong Plain as well as to Vientiane, the destination favoured by Tai youth. They relate their current mobilities to their past experiences, and also to issues of ‘development’. Thoug…

  • Ethnic Performance and the State in Laos: The Boun Greh Annual Festival of the Khmou

    Pierre Petit•ARTICLE•Asian Studies Review•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 6

Following the 1975 revolution, the Laotian statesmen adopted a modernising discourse that targeted “backward” traditions as undesirable. But since the 1990s, authorities have mitigated this standpoint, distinguishing “good” from “bad” traditions according to their compatibility with the program of national development, and professing their will to (re)instate the former as suitable expressions of culture in a multi-ethnic nation. This is manifest…

    Pierre Petit•ARTICLE•Anthropological Forum•2008•Cited by: 9•References: 10

Current debates about the resettlement issue in Laos point to the need to pay closer attention to the migrants' representations and practices. In this article, three biographies of recent settlers in Thongnamy (Bolikhamxay Province) are analysed to highlight some concrete mechanisms at work in this context of socio-economic change. People rely on a diversity of resources to make ends meet, with varying success. Kinship and social capital are vita…

  • La Crise: Lexicon and Ethos of the Second Economy in Lubumbashi

    Open Access•Pierre Petit, Georges Mulumbwa Mutambwa•ARTICLE•Africa•2005•Cited by: 16•References: 18

The second, or informal, economy developed later in Lubumbashi (DRC) than it had in Kinshasa. The Katanga metropolis, long protected from the process of informalization thanks to its large industrial complexes, suffered seriously from the crisis of the 1990s which led to the collapse of the mining industry and, more generally, of the whole salaried sector. After a brief history of the city and of the state of play of the informal economy, this ar…

    Open Access•Pierre Petit•ARTICLE•Africa•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 20
