    Open Access•Emmanuel Lozerand•ARTICLE•Viatica•2026

    Open Access•Emmanuel Lozerand•ARTICLE•Socio•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Consideration of individuals in the West often leads to considering the rest-of-the-world as communitarian or holistic. But this mode of thought, which plays a significant role in the self-definition of this “West” is a travesty of reality and weighs heavily on the relations between peoples. Our intention here is to give an idea of the variety of the individual-society constellations by outlining an archaeology of this binary discourse, in a crit…

  • Il n’y a pas d’individu au Japon. » Archéologie d’un stéréotype

    Open Access•Emmanuel Lozerand•ARTICLE•Ebisu•2014•Cited by: 1

During the nineteenth century, “faraway” societies were perceived as community-based and traditional. At the same time, nationalist and/or racialist doctrines were developed against a background of colonial expansion. Older conceptions of the “Orient” as a world of tradition and despotism were also revived. It was during this period that the stereotype of a supposed “lack of individuality” amongst the Japanese was formed.Japan’s victories over Ch…
