  • Teaching Complex Organizations: A Survey Essay

Betty A Dobratz, Betty Dobratz et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•1988

In this essay I briefly review six books that could be used as texts in teaching complex organizations. I began my quest for appropriate textbooks to review by examining a draft of Thomas Drabek's article, the Sociology of Complex Organizations, which also appears in this issue of Teaching Sociology. He identified six texts as excellent, but two of them were considerably dated (1979, 1981) and more recent editions were not available. In addition

  • The role and expectancy participation model: An empirical assessement and extension

    Open Access•Louis W Fry, Don Hellriegel•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1987•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Four hypotheses were investigated. The results substantially support and extend the usefulness of Schuler's role and expectancy participation model (1980). Schuler's model posits that participation intervenes to attenuate the relationships between job objectives and role conflicts and ambiguity. Also, participation, role conflict and role ambiguity are assumed to intervene to attenuate the relationships between job objectives and job satisfaction…

Most contingency theorists have focused on perceived environmental characteristics while ignoring the possible impact of individual differences among subjects. The view that an organization is for the most part what people perceive it to be suggests the need to identify the potential role of individual differences in the perceptions of organizational properties. Four sources of variability in the perception of uncertainty were suggested and measu…

Equal employment opportunity is a major personnel program in the federal government. It has rapidly developed from insignificant statements of policy on nondiscrimination to an affirmative action program intended to insure equality of opportunity. By analyzing the historical development of equal employment opportunity in the federal government, we will show that policies of nondiscrimination and affirmative action programs have been followed by c…
