  • Predicting the Deterioration of the Parent–Adolescent Relationship Among Non-Offending Mothers: Inquiry into Childhood Physical and Sexual Abuse and Depressive Symptoms

Open Access•Michael Fitzgerald, Michael T Fitzgerald et al.•ARTICLE•The Family Journal•2026

Childhood sexual and physical abuse is prevalent around the world and impacts many major developmental tasks of childhood, resulting in an increased risk of reporting depressive symptoms in adolescence. Despite research documenting that the parent–adolescent relationship is influenced by adolescent depression, there has been far less attention on change over time. The current study examined associations between childhood sexual and physical abuse…

  • Evaluating Complex Health Interventions through Contribution Analysis: A Scoping Review

Open Access•David Buetti, Michael Fitzgerald et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Background: Health interventions often involve complex, multifaceted components and dynamic, nonlinear effects that challenge traditional experimental methods like randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Contribution Analysis (CA) offers a theory-based impact evaluation approach that shifts the focus from solely attributing outcomes to interventions to understanding their contributions within specific contexts. Despite its widespread use in fields s…

  • A dyadic analysis of sibling perpetrated abuse in childhood on negative affect in adulthood among dizygotic twins: Contemporary family strain as a Moderator

Open Access•Celia Smith, Carlee Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2026•References: 77

Sibling abuse is one of the most common forms of maltreatment, yet it has been overlooked by researchers and clinicians alike. Sibling relationships are generally the most enduring relationships individuals have, even when there is sibling-perpetrated abuse in childhood. Supportive and strained relationships with family members may protect against or amplify negative affect resulting from sibling-perpetrated abuse in childhood, yet these proposit…

  • Psychological pathways from childhood maltreatment to inflammation among midlife and older adults

    Open Access•Viktoria Papp, Michael Fitzgerald•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2025

Findings of the study indicate that experiences of childhood neglect, but not abuse, appear to initiate a psychological cascade that results in elevated C-reactive protein. Neglect leads to raised levels of trait anger which, in turn, increases emotional suppression. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)

The co-authors undertook a case study research evaluation of a regional palliative integrated care service employing a participatory methodology, wherein academics and practitioners jointly conducted the research. This collaborative approach fostered an equal partnership, allowing co-researchers to…

Michael Fitzgerald, Alex Bishop•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2025

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been consistently linked to mental health problems. There have been recent conceptual and empirical critiques that suggest maltreatment and household dysfunction to not be combined to create a composite ACE score. Women in correctional custody demonstrate disproportionately high ACE levels and greater mental health problems as to racial minorities. The present study compared the effects of varying operati…

  • Conceptualizing and measuring childhood adversity: A comprehensive critique of the adverse childhood experiences measure and offering a new conceptualization of childhood adversity

Michael Fitzgerald, Kami Gallus•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2025

The landmark adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) study conducted by Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control shook the bedrock of the scientific community, highlighting the commonality of ACEs and identifying a dose-response relationship with poor health outcomes. The seminal findings led to a surge in ACEs research and a growing body of empirical literature; however, the ACEs measure has numerous conceptual and measurement issues t…

    Open Access•Timothy I Lawrence, Thomas W Wojciechowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2024

Objectives Experiencing physical sibling abuse is a form of family violence that is common but understudied. While it is often perceived as a normative aspect of sibling relationships, there are apparent behavioral consequences. The current study aims to advance the literature by utilizing the displaced aggression model and I 3 theory to longitudinally examine trait anger as a pathway linking physical sibling abuse to bullying perpetration. Childhood maltreatment influences adult physical health through cascading effects over the life course and it is critical to identify intervening processes. Marital quality has significant implications for adult physical health via cognitive, emotional, and behavioral pathways and may be a viable pathway. Given that cardiometabolic biomarkers are associated with the leading causes of death in the United States, the current study longitudinally in…

  • Generational effects of culture and digital media in former Soviet Republics

    Open Access•Benjamin D Horne, Natalie M Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2023

In public opinion, social and digital media provide means for influence as well as sorting according to pre-existing values. Here we consider types of media usage versus opinion using new polling results in the former Soviet republics (FSRs) of Belarus, Ukraine, and Georgia. Over 1000 individuals in each country were asked about a news event (the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol) and about the long-term future of their country. We find that yea…

    Open Access•Natalie M Rice, Benjamin D Horne et al.•ARTICLE•SN Social Sciences•2022

Analysts of social media differ in their emphasis on the effects of message content versus social network structure. The balance of these factors may change substantially across time. When a major event occurs, initial independent reactions may give way to more social diffusion of interpretations of the event among different communities, including those committed to disinformation. Here, we explore these dynamics through a case study analysis of …
