Social support protects against symptoms of anxiety and depression: Key variations in Latinx and non-Latinx White college students
Social support protects against perceived stress and its harmful effects on psychological well-being. College students in general are at high risk for mental health disorders, and Latinx college students face unique stressors placing them at greater risk of psychological distress. Social support may be a key construct in improving outcomes for college students; however, few studies have empirically tested whether the protective effect of social s…

The Glory of God is a Human Being Fully Alive: Predictors of Positive Versus Negative Mental Health Among Clergy
Clergy fulfill vital societal functions as meaning makers and community builders. Partly because of their important roles, clergy frequently encounter stressful situations. Further, studies suggest that clergy experience high rates of depression. Despite this, few studies have examined protective factors for clergy that may increase their positive mental health. We invited all United Methodist clergy in North Carolina to participate in a survey. …

Collaboration in Local Economic Development: The Case of Toledo
Many American communities place a high priority on retaining and attracting innovative industries. However, in most American metropolitan areas, the responsibility for local economic development is fragmented along jurisdictional and institutional lines. The result of this fragmentation is that local economic development is often chaotic with no one individual, agency, or jurisdiction in control, which may inhibit the effectiveness of local econo…

Chronic Pain, Stress, and the Dynamics of Affective Differentiation
We describe a program of research examining how the relationship between positive and negative affect varies both between individuals and within individuals over time. This Dynamic Model of Affect (DMA) proposes that under conditions that promote maximal information processing, positive and negative affective systems function relatively independently. In contrast, under conditions characterized by uncertainty, including pain and stress, the affec…

Cooperative education versus internships: A challenge for an applied geography programme
A recent debate among academic geographers has focused on the role of applied geography in the discipline. In it, internships are often viewed as one cornerstone of courses in applied geography. This paper discusses the advantages and weaknesses of cooperative education compared with internships. In many respects cooperative education represents a refinement of the internship concept. The chief advantage in its approach lies in the closer relatio…

Municipal Police Administration
T HE r61le of police in modern society steadily tends to become more difficult. Viewing the rudimentary police organizations of a little more than a century ago, one is filled with wonder that their work was not more defective than it actually proved to be. There seems to be only one satisfactory explanation. The police of that day were almost exclusively thief-takers. In other words they were ranged against a fairly definite group of offenders w…

With so many progressive measures carried through or in process of adoption it is a matter of real regret that little or no progress is being made in one highly important matter-the establishment of a real and effective training for police recruits and ultimately for those promoted to higher ranks. In this matter Chicago lags far behind o…
