  • A Longobard osteobiography. A multi-proxy life history of an elderly woman from Castel Trosino (Italy)

Open Access•Sara Bernardini, I Micarelli et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2023

The Longobard cemetery of Castel Trosino (Central Italy, c. 6th-8th CE) was excavated at the end of the 19th century, with more than two hundred burials recovered. Currently only 19 crania and a few mandibles are preserved. Among these crania, a case of trepanation is documented on an elderly woman (c. 50 y.o.): the medical treatment, or the condition that led to it, likely influenced her life history. A multidisciplinary investigation of the onl…

  • Stabbed to death

    Open Access•Carlotta Zeppilli, I Micarelli et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 50

Here we report the reconstruction of the osteobiography of an adult male buried in the Longobard cemetery of Povegliano Veronese (Northern Italy, late 6th - early 8th century CE), who shows signs of interpersonal violence. The palaeopathological investigation reveals sharp force traumas on the body of the fourth lumbar vertebra and on two right ribs. The absence of signs of healing or bone remodelling indicates that the defects were perimortem. T…

  • An unprecedented case of cranial surgery in Longobard Italy (6th-8th century) using a cruciform incision

Open Access•I Micarelli, Flavia Strani et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•References: 26

The Longobard necropolis of Castel Trosino dates from the 6th to the 8th century CE. Among the tombs excavated, the skull of an older female shows the first evidence of a cross-shaped bone modification on a living subject. Macroscopic, microscopic, and CT scan analyses revealed signs of at least two sets of scraping marks. Specifically, SEM analysis shows that perimortem bone-scraping traces are present on the skull. Both healed and non-healed de…

  • Reevaluating the Health and Nutritional Status of Maize-Dependent Populations

Barrett P Brenton, Robert R Paine•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•2007

Pellagra, a niacin/tryptophan deficiency disease, is prevalent in populations that have high maize/low protein diets. Historically it has been essentially a disease of undernutrition and social inequality. We offer a unique analysis of both macro- and microstructural skeletal indicators from 31 individuals known to have died from pellagra (n = 14) and non-specific general malnutrition (n = 17). These cases are part of the Raymond Dart Skeletal Co…

  • Cranial trauma in iron age Samnite agriculturists, Alfedena, Italy

    Open Access•Robert R Paine, Domenico Mancinelli et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2007•Cited by: 18•References: 14

The Samnites are an Iron Age protohistoric people from the central region of Italy. The skeletal remains are from the Alfedena necropolis, 6th through 5th centuries B.C. Macchiarelli et al. (Antropologia Contemporanea 4 ( 1981 ) 239–243) were the first to report on cranial trauma for this population, presenting four cases with extreme injuries. We re‐examined this well documented skeletal population for additional examples of trauma. Previously u…

  • Pellagra and Paleonutrition

    Open Access•Barrett P Breoton, Robert R Paine•ARTICLE•Nutritional Anthropology•2000

This article outlines research avenues that can aid us in reinterpreting and expanding our understanding of the paleonutrition and skeletal biology of maize intensive horticulturists. We suggest that new and innovative perspectives about their diet and health can emerge from hypotheses concerning skeletal manifestations of pellagra. Pellagra, a niacin/tryptophan deficiency disease, is prevalent in populations that have high-maize and low-protein …

  • Limb joint surface areas and their ratios in Malagasy lemurs and other mammals

Surface areas of humeral and femoral heads scale largely as a function of body size. However, differences in the relative sizes of these articular surfaces are correlated with differential joint mobility and force transmission through fore‐ and hindlimbs. They can therefore assist interpretation of the positional behavior of extinct species. In this paper, we document variation in ratios of humeral head surface area to femoral head surface area a…

  • Bone remodeling rates

    Open Access•Sam D Stout, Robert R Paine•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1994•Cited by: 15•References: 10

Frost (1987a) proposed an algorithm for estimating the number of missing osteons that correspond to observed osteon population densities (OPD). Such an algorithm should allow more accurate estimates of bone remodeling rates for skeletal remains for which in vivo labeling is not possible. In order to validate the algorithm, it was tested on an autopsy sample of 44 ribs. Estimates of activation frequency. ( \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\…

  • Histological age estimation using rib and clavicle

    Open Access•Sam D Stout, Robert R Paine•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1992•Cited by: 33•References: 13

Histological methods for estimating age at death using osteon population densities for the rib, clavicle, and rib and clavicle combined are presented. Predicting formulas were generated from a sample of 40 individuals of known age, sex, and race. Independent samples of 12 ribs and 7 clavicles were used to test the formulas. Mean differences between known and predicted ages were 1.1 years, 2.6 years, and 3.4 years for the clavicle, rib and clavicl…
