  • Currency internationalization with Chinese characteristics

Open Access•Barry Eichengreen, Camille Macaire et al.•ARTICLE•International Finance•2024

It is widely assumed that the renminbi (RMB) cannot acquire a meaningful place in central bank reserve portfolios without full liberalization of China's capital account. We argue that the RMB can in fact develop into an international reserve currency in the absence of capital‐account convertibility. Trade and investment links can drive use despite limited access to Chinese financial markets. But this route to currency internationalization require…

  • Mars or Mercury redux

Open Access•Barry Eichengreen, Arnaud Mehl et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2021

We analyse the role of economic and security considerations in bilateral trade agreements. We use the pre‐World War I period to test whether trade agreements are governed by standard gravity variables, or by instead—or in addition—geopolitical factors. While we like others find support for standard gravity variables, we also find that defence pacts boost the probability of trade agreements by as much as 20 percentage points. Our estimates imply t…

  • Thick vs. Thin-Skinned

Open Access•Barry Eichengreen, Romain Lafarguette et al.•ARTICLE•IMF Working Paper•2017

We study the impact of technology on the reaction of financial markets to information, focusing on the foreign exchange market. We contrast the "thin-skinned" view that technological improvements cause markets to react more to new information with the "thick-skinned" view that they react less. We pinpoint exogenous technological changes using the timing of the connection of countries via the submarine fiber-optic cables used for electronic tradin…

  • Network effects, homogeneous goods and international currency choice

Open Access•Barry Eichengreen, Livia Chitu et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Economics/Revue…•2016

Conventional wisdom has it that network effects are strong in markets for homogenous goods, leading to the dominance of one settlement currency in such markets. The dominance of the US dollar in global oil markets is said to epitomize this phenomenon. We question this presumption with evidence for earlier periods showing that several national currencies have simultaneously played substantial roles in global oil markets. European oil import paymen…

  • Mutual Assistance between Federal Reserve Banks

Open Access•Barry Eichengreen, Arnaud Mehl et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article reconstructs the history of mutual assistance among Federal Reserve Banks. We present data on accommodation operations through which Reserve Banks mutualized gold reserves in emergency situations between 1913 and 1960. Reserve sharing was important in response to liquidity crises and bank runs. Such cooperation was essential for the cohesion of the U.S. monetary union. But fortunes could change, with emergency recipients of gold beco…

  • China's Dominance Hypothesis and the Emergence of a Tri-polar Global Currency System

    Open Access•Marcel Fratzscher, Arnaud Mehl•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 38

This study assesses whether the international monetary system is already tri‐polar by testing what we call China's ‘dominance hypothesis’, i.e. whether the renminbi already influences exchange rate and monetary policies strongly in Asia, a direct reference to the old ‘German dominance hypothesis’ which ascribed to the German mark a dominant role in Europe in the 1980s. Using a global factor model of exchange rates and a complementary event study,…
