  • Interpreting the Body in Early Modern Italy: Pregnancy, Abortion and Adulthood

    P Renee Baernstein, John Christopoulos•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2014

On the night of 13 November 1569 the nuns of San Paolo Converso in Milan witnessed an unfamiliar scene: a childbirth. A boarder in their convent, Costanza Colonna, delivered a dead male child after three days of hard labour. All the many people present professed profound surprise. The 13-year-old Costanza, her servants, her physicians and her husband had all insisted until that very night that she was a virgin, that her husband was impotent, and …

  • In My Own Hand”: Costanza Colonna and the Art of the Letter in Sixteenth-Century Italy

    Open Access•P Renee Baernstein•ARTICLE•Renaissance Quarterly•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Scholarship on Italian women’s secular writing of the sixteenth century has illuminated the remarkable success female authors enjoyed in print, as well as the complex and ambivalent responses they evoked as a group. This article argues that the more shadowy praxis of ordinary female letter-writing, an obligation for most elite wives and widows, required a baseline level of literacy that enabled more eminent literary women to flourish in print. Th…

  • Savonarola's Women: Visions and Reform in Renaissance Italy

    P Renee Baernstein•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2009

Girolamo Savonarola's legacy remains disputed territory to this day. Is he best understood as an Observant forerunner of Martin Luther, a divinely inspired critic of Italy's social decline, a protagonist—however atypical—of the history of Florentine (and Italian) republicanism, or simply a censor run amok? In this book, Tamar Herzig examines some of the earliest struggles over his reception, as she uncovers an understudied female line of transmis…

  • Tullia d’Aragona: Two New Sonnets

    P Renee Baernstein, Julia L Hairston•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2008

This article provides a transcription and translation of two new autograph sonnets of Tullia d'Aragona (1505/10-1556), dedicated to members of the Colonna family of Rome, which were recently discovered in the Archivio Colonna (Subiaco). The poems share themes and topoi typical of the poet's work--fame and immortality through verse, the threat of cruel fortune--and likely date from a later period of her career.Their dedications suggest a connection…

    P Renee Baernstein•REVIEW•Sixteenth Century Journal•1994

At the close of the 16th century, despite Protestant attempts to discourage popular devotion to saints and shrines, the Roman Catholic Church in Bavaria initiated a propagandistic campaign through the publishing of pilgrimage books and pamphlets. Philip Soergel's exploration of this little-known pilgrimage literature yields a vivid portrait of religion before, during and after the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. These advertisements, combini…

Aux XV e et XVI e siecles, les veuves sont particulierement nombreuses dans les populations conventuelles. Souvent, la propre famille de la veuve entre en rivalite avec le couvent au sujet de l'argent et de la loyaute.
