Wabi Sabi in Virtual Reality sketching
In creativity using digital tools, traditional design guidelines promote abundant, inexpensive, disposable ways to create which are not compatible with sustainability concerns. We explore alternatives to this paradigm by comparing the main Virtual Reality sketch method with a new paradigm inspired by traditional Japanese concept named Wabi-Sabi. We observe that removing the possibility to erase and limiting the quantity of virtual paint are chang…
Wabi-Sabi in Virtual Reality Sketching
Traditional design promotes abundant, inexpensive, and disposable ways to create that are not compatible with sustainability. The authors explore alternatives to this paradigm by comparing a virtual reality sketch method with a new approach inspired by the traditional Japanese concept Wabi-Sabi. An experiment limited users’ amount of virtual paint and removed users’ ability to erase, and while participants’ creative approaches and processes chang…
Process and Pendulum in Schubert's Expanded Type 1 Sonatas
Through analysis of three of Schubert's expanded Type 1 sonatas - the Finales of the Piano Sonata, D. 960, the Cello Quintet, D. 956 and the 'Rosamunde' Quartet, D. 804 - this article brings to light a recapitulatory formal process that Schubert seems to have favoured for works in this form. The process is as follows: after the pieces under consideration are 'expanded' by interpolations of developmental material into their recapitulations, each o…
Recapitulatory Compressions in Some Texted and Instrumental Works by Schubert
The thematic organization of musical reprises and recapitulations has not received as much attention as that of expositions. One reason for this is the assumption that recapitulations are simply retracings of thematic paths already plotted in the exposition, with their tonal profiles adjusted to remain in the tonic. The present article seeks to complexify this view by devoting analytic and interpretive attention to a handful of refrains, reprises…
