Recent Writings about Soviet Historiography
In this essay, George Enteen reviews two studies of Soviet historiography, one Russian and one western, as well as a Russian who's who of historians. The Russian study, which examines the establishment of censorship in the 1920s, is based on archives that have usually been overlooked. The western study examines the struggle against intellectual controls in the years from 1956 to 1974 and draws on archives and extensive interviews. This latter stu…
Historiography and Nationalism
GEORGE M. ENTEEN (University Park, Penn., U.S.A.) HISTORIOGRAPHY AND NATIONALISM Isaiah Berlin once observed that none of the great modern thinkers-those monuments who since the seventeenth century have transformed the categories of our thought and who have imposed their vision upon us--expected nationalism to become the force it is. Nor were they constrained to account for its origin. It was a minor figure, according to Berlin, Moses Hess, refer…

Marxists versus Non-Marxists
The policy of "using non-communist hands in the building of communism," almost as old as the Soviet government itself, came to an end at the outset of the First Five-Year Plan. In the early 1920s the Communist Party had come to accept the realities of a socialist regime confined to an underdeveloped country. Consequently, during the years of the New Economic Policy (1921- 28), the party sought to guide numerous institutions in which its members a…
Pokrovsky's rehabilitation
THERE are certain ambiguities, it seems, in my article, 'Soviet Historians Review Their Own Past: The Rehabilitation of M. N. Pokrovsky', that have led the reader to misunderstand my interpretation of the subject. Professor Eissenstat has understood me to view Pokrovsky's rehabilitation as the outcome of efforts by Soviet historians to appease their consciences. Furthermore, he suggested by inference that I do not consider 'the response of the pa…
Soviet historians review their own past
HISTORIANS arrived at a post-Stalin interpretation of Pokrovsky before the party publicly took up the matter of his standing. Pokrovsky's name was bruited about in the flurry of disputation surrounding the XX Party Congress. If-there was favourable reference to him in I956,1 then there was at least one reversion to the formula 'anti-Leninist' in 95 7.2 But by that time those who stood against a favourable evaluation of him had thrown out the old …
The History Faculty of Moscow State University
I spent the fall of 1966 as an exchange fellow at Moscow State University, where I obtained and had deciphered a copy of the academic plan of the history faculty for 1964. In this article I propose to set forth some of the major facts about the history faculty and to comment upon them on the basis of personal observations.' Certain features of the curriculum stand out-most notably the enormous number of hours the student spends in the lecture hal…
