  • The Gore Pit Skeleton: Earliest Dated Human Burial from Oklahoma

    Kenneth D Keith, Clyde C Snow•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1976•Cited by: 1

One facet of the multidisciplinary Gore Pit site investigation is the human skeletal analysis presented below. This report includes the usual information pertaining to determination of age, sex and stature as well as a concise metrical and morphological description of the extant remains. In addition, our findings regarding the observed anomalous and pathological conditions (and their aetiologies) are briefly summarized

  • Statistical assessment of commingled skeletal remains

    Open Access•Clyde C Snow, Earl D Folk•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1970•Cited by: 1

Commingling in mixed burials is generally detected through the discovery of duplicate elements or bony evidence of sex, age, or statural differences in the recovered bones. In cases where the suspected commingling involves closely similar individuals and the total skeletal parts total less than one individual, it is important to consider the possibility that the recovered assemblage, through chance, may consist of non‐duplicated elements. A metho…

  • Reconstruction of facial features from the skull: An evaluation of its usefulness in forensic anthropology

Open Access•Clyde C Snow, Betty Pat Gatliff et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1970•Cited by: 6•References: 2

Although facial reconstructions from the skull have been widely used in forensic anthropology, their effectiveness has not been objectively assessed. Photographs of two reconstructions produced in this laboratory were shown to FAA employees and local policemen who were asked to select the subject's in vivo photograph when included with those of six other randomly‐selected individuals of the same sex, race, and general age. While in both tests the…

  • Trait analysis of the dentition of the Tarahumara Indians and Mestizos of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico

    Open Access•Richard G Snyder, Albert A Dahlberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1969•Cited by: 6•References: 7

A new approach of trait analysis of the dentition is presented, based upon study of both deciduous and permanent dentitions of 114 Tarahumara Indians and 63 Mestizos of both sexes and ranging in age from 5 to 23 years. Molar cusp patterns and numbers, and odontometries were analyzed and compared, and penetrance, sexual dimorphism, and concordance were investigated. To examine penetrance and expressivity of Carabelli's cusp and the protostylid, fi…

  • Anthropological and physiological observations on Tarahumara endurance runners

Open Access•Bruno Balke, Clyde Snow et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1965•Cited by: 18•References: 5

The Tarahumara Indians of Northwestern Mexico have long been famous as endurance runners. These capabilities are best displayed in the traditional Tarahumara sport of kick‐ball racing. Participants in such races may cover up to 100 miles in 24 hours and races lasting 48 hours are not uncommon. This paper presents findings of a preliminary study of Tarahumara endurance capabilities. The data indicate that experienced kick‐ball racers are capable o…
