  • Concepts of Social Sex Roles Among Chilean Adolescents

    Open Access•R C Williamson, Georgene H Seward•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

The study reports the findings with 210 Chilean male and female adolescents on a 12-point semantic differential scale. Comparisons were made for 7 concepts (men, my mother, women, my father, myself, the ideal man, the ideal woman). In view of the more highly differentiated sex roles in Latin America it was hypothetized that greater differences would be found in the Chilean subjects than in previously tested United States and German samples. The f…

  • Decision Making and Adjustment among Soviet-Jewish EmigrEs in a Middle-sized Urban Area

    R C Williamson•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•1996

Since the 1970s Soviet-Jewish refugees have increasingly chosen the US over Israel. Most of the earlier migrants settled in large cities, where the émigrés and the Jewish community both felt considerable ambivalence about the migration. The present study focuses on a middle-size urban area in Eastern Pennsylvania, in which the majority of the migrants were preceded by a relative. The study analyses their struggle for a career, language competency…

This study must be viewed in the context of the decline of the ML (minority language) in a number of Western nations. The authors’ previous research on the social factors in several ML areas (Friulan, Romansh, Breton, Welsh, Gaelic, and Pennsylvania German) pointed to the effects of given ‘subcultures’ such as age and social class. Interviews with both open‐ended and standardised items on usage of the ML and OL as well as attitudes toward bilingu…

  • A Partial Replication of the Kohn-Gecas-Nye Thesis in a German Sample

    R C Williamson•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1984

The study relates to the effect of social class and other background factors on childhood socialization. The Kohn research indicating the middle-class tendency to use psychological rather than physical approaches to discipline received tentative confirmaton in the Gecas and Nye investigation on class differences. Using basically the same instrument with a German urban sample, the present investigator again found a middle-class preference for psyc…

IOLENCE has generally been associated with revolution, war, or organized crime. The present century has been remarkable for large-scale violence in these three categories. Much of recent mass violence has been a product of guerrilla or undeclared warfare, including struggles of liberation from colonial rule, and conflicts between different power groups. At the broadest base, one might say, a trifle pretentiously, that violence and terror are an e…

  • Psychological Correlates of Housing in Central America

    Open Access•R C Williamson•ARTICLE•Journal of Inter-American Studies•1964

Traditional or developing areas of the world are moving toward urban and industrial societies characterized by rationalistic behavior. To an appreciable extent this transition is identified as the rise of urban middle sectors or classes, at least in the case of Latin America. One phase of the transition from a stage of economic underdevelopment to an industrial system has been the advent of public housing. Latin America in the last twenty years h…
