Functional Variability of Tools at Epipaleolithic Sites of the Elbrus Region
The goal of this paper is to report results of research of the influence that economic specifics of the Epipalaeolithic sites in the Elbrus region had on the composition of lithic industry. The traceological analysis made it possible to determine a functional variability of tools in sites dated from different age. Based on the correlation of the habitation activity index and technical, typological and traceological analyses, the sites dating afte…
Armes de chasse dans l’Épipaléolithique du Caucase du Nord
Lithic Points in the Epipaleolithic of the North-Western Caucasus
The Epipaleolithic industries of the Caucasus, which have similar technical and typological characteristics, contain also a specific set of lithic points, which includes mainly symmetrically retouched points, the Gravette and microgravette points, and Vachons points, as well as more rare shouldered points and some other diverse forms. The majority of previous functional analyses of the Late Upper Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic lithic points did n…
The terminal Pleistocene –ea rly Holocene cultural continuity in the north-central Caucasus
Upper Palaeolithic Complex of Cultural Horizon 2G of Kovrizhka IV Site on the Vitim River (Baikal-Patom Highland)
In 2016—2018 a living complex dated to ca. 18,6 kyr cal BP was excavated at Kovrizhka IV site, level 2G. This is an ocher colored area of 5.0 m in diameter, with a semi-circular hearth lined by four slabs, and a massive slab surrounded with large boulders and gneiss fragments. Slabs and boulders forming an arc were recorded on the periphery of the complex, and two pits (post-holes?) of 20 cm in diameter were found on the northern and southern out…
Organization of the Living Space and the Inferred Economic Activity at the Middle Paleolithic Site in Saradj-Chuko Grotto (based on materials of layer 6B)
The use of modern methods of microstratigraphic and planigraphic analyses allows the authors to speak about features of organizing life space in the Middle Paleolithic sites. The layer 6B at Saradj-Chuko grotto can be defined as an actively occupied Middle Paleolithic habitation site, where ancient humans were engaged in manufacture and use of obsidian tools. A tracelogical analysis allowed the authors to reconstruct various economic activities o…
Obsidian Spearhead in the Middle Paleolithic of the Elbrus Region. Preliminary Data on the Hunting Strategies
The paper presents the first results of comprehensive studies of the hunting and hunting weapons of the Neanderthals during the Middle Paleolithic in the Elbrus region in the Northern Caucasus. The research is based not only on the analysis of the fauna and tool typology, but also on the use-wear analysis of hunting weapons. The work is based on the materials of layer 6B from the Saradj-Chuko grotto, the only stratified Middle Paleolithic site in…

Comparative Characteristics of Stone Tools from the Neolithic Sites on the Upper and Middle Kama
This article presents results of a comprehensive analysis of stone tools from six Neolithic sites in the Upper and Middle Kama basin, three of which belong to the Kama culture and three to the Volga- Kama culture. Technological, typological, traceological, and spatial analyses were used. Differences between both lithic industries are minor in all parameters. Technologically, both are characterized by regular knapping aimed at the production of bl…
