  • Viy in Nikolai Gogol's Novella and Related Mythological Creatures in Ukrainian Folklore

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno•ARTICLE•Religions•2023•References: 3

This article examines Ukrainian folkloric parallels to Viy, a character in the horror novella of the same name by Nikolai Gogol. It is a formidable chthonic, demonic creature whose eyelids cover the eyes and need to be lifted, and the gaze sees what is hidden from others. Although the writer claimed that this character, like the entire plot of the story, was taken from Ukrainian folklore, some modern researchers claim that Viy is the author's own…

  • Dzerassa – the goddess of the templars

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno, К Ю РАХНО•ARTICLE•Kavkaz-forum•2021

  • Assyrian Parallels to the Nart Epos of the Ossetians

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno, К Ю РАХНО•ARTICLE•Kavkaz-forum•2021

  • Iranian Epic Motives in “Taras Bulba” by Nikolay Gogol

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno, К Ю РАХНО•ARTICLE•Kavkaz-forum•2020

  • Born From a Rock

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno, К Ю РАХНО•ARTICLE•Kavkaz-forum•2020

  • Problems of Studying Karachai-Balkar Nart Sagas in the Light of Vsevolod Miller’s Observations

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno, К Ю РАХНО•ARTICLE•Kavkaz-forum•2020

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2019

This article deals with the description of the posthumous destiny of the dead in the horror story A Terrible Vengeance by Mykola Gogol. It describes the patrimonial cemetery of the sorcerer, where all his ancestors were buried. Their corpses rise from their graves, but the first local dead man, the largest of them, cannot rise, and his movements cause earthquakes. These images can be fully understood only in comparison with Chuvash beliefs about …

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno•ARTICLE•ЕтноАнтропоЗум/EthnoAnthropoZoom•2016

This paper talks about the beliefs of the potters from the Chernigov region in the Ukraine. Namely, when the potters prepared the pottery, traditionally they included a plethora of magic activities in order to control the elements directly involved in the process. Candles had a significant role during these magic rituals and this is considered a preChristian feature dedicated to the cult of the old Slavic God Perun

  • Žir i žirnye vremena

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2016

This article deals with one symbolic concept in the Tale of Igor’s Campaign – fat and gold. Fat, which Prince Igor let sink to the bottom of the Kayala, was not simply an abundance, and the fat times, scared away by the Maiden Wrong, were not just the rich ones. They are connected with the Iranian mythological beliefs. The Ossetians believed that the earth used to secrete a certain peculiar nutritious fat far in the past, but these blessed times …

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2014

This article deals with the semantics of the image of the Unknown Land in the Tale of Igor’s Campaign. It is proposed to examine it in the light of the warriors’ classification of lands peculiar to the Ossetians and reflected in the Ossetian Nart sagas. The ancestors of the modern Ossetians, the Alans, were the closest neighbours and allies of the Slavic population of the Kievan Rus. Therefore many folklore motifs and religious conceptions of the…

    Open Access•Kostyantyn Rakhno•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2011

The article deals with the specific character of the traditional perception of the fire of a pottery kiln in the context of the mythopoetical model of the world among the Belarusians. This flame was identified with lightning, the stormy fire of Perun, which was interpreted as an emanation of this pagan God.
