Regional Education Hub
Although claiming to promote South-South internationalization, regional education hubs in the Global South should be viewed as localizing established Global North practices in higher education. By deploying epistemic justice and cognitive empire conceptual tools, this paper argues that establishing institutions to transform a country into a region's educational hub does not translate to recognizing and representing local and regional knowledge sy…
An integrative systematic review of career transitions across STEM and Hass disciplines
Amidst growing academic job market saturation, doctoral education faces urgent calls to reorient PhD training toward diverse career pathways. This integrative systematic review synthesises 27 empirical studies (2015–2024), identified through Scopus and Eric, using the SPIDER framework and criticall…
Unequal returns? A bourdieusian analysis of the state-funded education and career pathways in Kazakhstan
Silencing the scholar
This paper examines how Kazakhstan’s state-funded doctoral work mandate redefines the purpose of the PhD, shifting it from knowledge production to state obligation. Drawing on Bourdieu’s theory of practice and Appraisal Theory, we analyse how policy documents construct the doctoral graduate not as a scholar but as a repayable investment. The findings identify three interrelated mechanisms: the conversion of academic capital into state-aligned lab…

The views are analyzed and interpreted employing three theoretical pe…
Social stratifying Kazakhstan
This study addresses educational disparities faced by socioeconomically disadvantaged students, particularly in accessing international higher education in the post-Soviet region, focusing on Kazakhstan. While studies of social class formation in developing countries are inconclusive, the literature overwhelmingly shows that high socioeconomic groups dominate access to international education. In this qualitative study, we conducted semi-structur…

Amidst growing concerns about economic and environmental sustainability, elitism and cognitive justice, among other critical issues, internationalisation remains a vital government policy. By tracing Kazakhstan's development since independence from the Soviet Union and focusing on key higher ed…

A comparative scoping review of the impact of international economic sanctions on education

The purpose of this scoping review was to map the literature on the effects of international economic sanctions on education. Searches of eight electronic databases and the grey literature were conducted to identify published empirical stu…
Frantz Fanon and the problematic of decolonization
The failure to achieve meaningful development by African countries, especially those that inherited relatively advanced infrastructure at independence, has remained a conundrum. Utilizing Frantz Fanon’s major writings and ideas, and other commentaries on Fanon’s work, this paper aims to expose the problem of achieving genuine development outside the dominant neoliberal paradigm. According to the government of Zimbabwe, the aim of their indigeniza…
