Religion in Irish Literature and Culture
Contrary to the widespread belief in Ireland's rapid secularisation, religion continues to play a significant role in twenty-first-century Irish culture, though not in the familiar forms of Catholicism and Protestantism. This volume seeks to redress the balance and demonstrate that religion intersects with and informs past and present Irish culture. While writers from Sean O'Casey to Edna O'Brien have challenged religious oppression, Joyce's here…
Gothic Fiction and the Writing of Trauma, 1914–1934: The Ghosts of World War One
Return of the Brute (1929), the Irish writer Liam O’Flaherty’s short, bruising, fictional account of life on the Western Front, concludes with Gunn, a portentously named traumatised infantryman, br
Ireland
There are many Oscar Wildes—a ‘complex multiform creature’ indeed, as his biographers never tire of informing us—though popular culture tends to be interested in only a handful. For years, Wilde was treated as an ‘English’ writer; that he was born and reared in Ireland was considered relatively unimportant. Nowadays, of course, his Irishness is much better known and ‘Wilde the Irishman’ has been welcomed on to the public and scholarly stage. Howe…

The greening of Oscar Wilde: Situating Ireland in the Wilde wars
The importance of Ireland to an understanding of Oscar Wilde has been the subject of contentious discussion in recent years. For one group of critics Wilde has been considered “a militant Irish republican”, an Irish “terrorist by another name”, whose literary practices resembled those of “guerrilla warfare”, an ardent Home Ruler and Parnellite, and committed Irish nationalist whose work is suffused with references to Ireland and the Irish Questio…

The Emergence of Irish Gothic Fiction: History, Origins, Theories
Killeen's book provides a new account of the emergence of Irish gothic fiction in mid-eighteenth century. This book provides a robustly theorised and thoroughly historicised account of the ‘beginnings’ of Irish gothic fiction, maps the theoretical terrain covered by other critics, and puts forward a new history of the emergence of the genre in Ireland. The main argument the book makes is that the Irish gothic should be read in the context of the …

Education and the labour market: Subjective aspects of human capital investment
This paper explores subjective aspects of human capital investment decisions in education. It gives an insight into ways in which students in Year 11 and Year 13 perceive the connection between their education and the labour market and the mechanisms by which qualifications translate into life chances. An instrument is described which was used to assess perceptions in terms of 'productivity', 'screening' and 'credentialism'. Our findings suggest …

The Comic Costume Controversy
As to the wearing of a leather phallus by fifth-century comic actors, Pickard- Cambridge wrote: ‘Aristophanes’ resolution ( Nu 537 ff.) to avoid such indecencies does not seem to have lasted long.’ One year would not have beenlong; and Beare, who resumed Thiele's position, and Webster, who supported that of Körte, carried on a controversy on the matter without reference to what I believe is a relevant, if misunderstood, text
