Determinants of socioemotional and behavioral well-being among First Nations children living off-reserve in Canada
Few studies have focused on off-reserve Indigenous children and families. This nationally representative, cross-sectional study (data collected from 2006 to 2007) examined Indigenous- and non-Indigenous-specific determinants associated with positive socioemotional and behavioral well-being among First Nations children living off-reserve in Canada. The parents or other caregivers of 2990 two-to-five-year-old children (M = 3.65; 50.6% male) reporte…
Moral Cultivation and Divine Revelation
James Legge (1815-1897), arguably the most prominent missionary sinologist in the nineteenth century and the founding Professor of Chinese in Oxford in 1876, produced an English translation of the Yijing (Book of Changes), the prominent Chinese classic, in 1882. This translation was included in Max Müller's monumental Sacred Books of the East series. While existing scholarship has outlined some background and features of Legge's Yijing translatio…

Literary Representations of Christianity in Late Qing and Republican China
Literary Representations of Christianity in Late Qing and Republican China contributes to the "literary turn" in the study of Chinese Christianity by foregrounding the importance of literary texts, including the major genres of Chinese Christian literature (novels, drama and poetry) of the late Qing and Republican periods. These multifarious types of texts demonstrated the multiple representations and dynamic scenes of Christianity, where Christi…
The Catholic Yijing
Yijing benzhi 易經本旨 (original meaning of the Yijing, 1774) constitutes a unique piece of Christian literature produced by the Chinese Catholic believer Lü Liben 呂立本 in the Qing period. Following in the footsteps of Jesuit missionaries such as Joachim Bouvet (1656-1730), Lü represents a rare Chinese voice of the Figurist interpretation of the Yijing by claiming that ancient Chinese sages had received and recorded God's divine revelation in this ven…
Wellspring of Inspiration
Coinciding with the May Fourth new cultural and literary movement, the publication of the Mandarin Union Version , the vernacular Chinese translation of the Bible, in 1919 had a profound impact on the formation of modern Chinese literature. This paper examines the ways in which the Union Version provided a novel source of imageries, poetic genres and worldviews for the experimentation of modern Chinese poetry during the Republican period, particu…
Performing Religion
In the aftermath of the collapse of the Qing regime in 1911, a corpus of dramatic texts, chiefly rewritings of biblical stories, was published by the Catholic presses in China during the Republican era (1912–1949). Some biblical tales were creatively represented in a variety of dramatic genres, including traditional Chinese opera, folk performing arts, and modern spoken drama. These performative texts were periodically put on stage in Catholic ch…
Doctrinal Dispute within Interdenominational Missions
Both interdenominational co-operation and denominational competition featured in the Protestant missionary literary enterprise in nineteenth-century China. The interdenominational Religious Tract Society in London became the most vital link between the missionary translators, printing presses and target audiences in the production, publication and distribution of Christian tracts. Ideally, interdenominational missions would pool resources and pro…
