Prenatal clinicians’ perspectives on trauma-informed care competency and training
BACKGROUND: Prenatal clinicians express willingness to provide trauma-informed care (TIC) yet report barriers in translating TIC principles into practice. This study explored prenatal clinicians' perspectives on TIC competency and training, with the goal of identifying actionable strategies to strengthen training approaches in prenatal care. METHODS: A mixed methods study design was employed. A purposive sampling technique was used to recruit pre…
Mental health among university employees during the Covid-19 pandemic: The role of previous life trauma and current posttraumatic stress symptoms
Results suggest that PTSD symptoms play a crucial role in the experience of MHH and stress during the pandemic for those who endured previous trauma. Implications for employer policies, public health messaging, and mental health services are explored. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Voices of Women With Lived Experience of Substance Use During Pregnancy: A Qualitative Study of Motivators and Barriers to Recruitment and Retention in Research
Despite concerns about negative neurocognitive effects of in utero substance exposure on child and brain development, research in this area is limited. This study gathered perspectives of persons with lived experience of substance use (eg, alcohol, prescription and illicit opioids, and other illicit substances) during a previous pregnancy to determine facilitators and barriers to research engagement in this vulnerable population. We conducted str…
Health Risk Behaviors and Resilience Among Low-Income, Black Primary Care Patients: Qualitative Findings From a Trauma-Informed Primary Care Intervention Study
This study describes an intervention with low-income, Black primary care patients and their experience in changing a health risk behavior. Participant themes, including behavioral coping, personal values, accomplishments and strengths, barriers and strategies, and social support, are understood in relationship to health behavior theories. Two structured interviews were conducted 1 month apart. Content analysis was used to analyze responses from 4…
Mediational pathways of meditation and exercise on mental health and perceived stress: A randomized controlled trial
This study investigated the effects of mindfulness and exercise training on indicators of mental health and stress by examining shared mediators of program effects. Community-recruited adults ( N = 413) were randomized into one of three conditions: (a) mindfulness-based stress reduction, (b) moderate intensity exercise, or (c) wait-list control. Composite indicator structural equation models estimated direct, indirect, and total effects. Results …
Adjustment characteristics of healthy siblings of children with autism
We compared parents’ self-reports with self-reports from 27 children who have siblings with autism and 27 children with no disabled sibling. A qualitative analysis of data from the Child Behavioral Checklist and the quantitative analysis of the Weinberger Adjustment Inventory produced two main findings: (a) siblings have markedly lower levels of participation in extracurricular activities; and (b) parents and siblings defined the attributes ‘help…
Making Sure Research Is Used: Community-Generated Recommendations for Disseminating Research
Academic research, no matter how innovative, will never make a difference in the lives of people unless it is disseminated in an appropriate and timely manner to providers and organizations serving the public. Yet many researchers are not trained, rewarded, or supported to disseminate research findings. The Community Advisory Board (CAB) of the University of California, San Francisco, Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) developed a set guid…
Behavior Problems in Bedouin Elementary Schoolchildren
Emotional and behavior problems in Bedouin elementary schoolchildren were investigated. Teachers completed the Teachers' Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist on 953 children: 461 children who had previously been rated by teachers as having referral level behavioral and/or learning problems and 492 children rated as non-problematic by their teachers. There were significant differences between these two groups on total behavior problem score…
Health Status during the Transition in Central and Eastern Europe: Development in Reverse
This paper reports on a study of the cross-national trends in health status during the economic transition and associated health sector reforms in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The central premise is that before long-run gains in health status are realized, the transition towards a market economy and adoption of democratic forms of government should lead to short-run deterioration as a result of: (i) reduction in real income and widening inco…
Secondary Reinforcement Effects as a Function of Reward Magnitude Training Methods
5 groups of 10 albino rats were trained by direct goalbox placement to either a black or striped goalbox. Two groups were trained under absolute conditions with either large (A-L) or small reward (A-S), and 2 groups were discrimination trained to the goalboxes with either large (D-L) or small (D-S) reward. A fifth group received differential training with large reward to one goalbox and small reward to the other (Df). The test period, consisting …
