Children’s participation and the logic of care
The Childhood-Haus (CH) concept in Germany, based on the Northern European Barnahus model, aims to provide child-friendly care and justice for children suspected of having experienced violence. A key element of the concept is the promotion of children's rights, including the right to be heard and receive information (Barnahus Standard 1.2), also referred to as child participation. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at three CHs and infor…
Enhancing iodine health awareness among adolescents
Mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency remains a public health challenge, particularly in Europe and in areas where access to iodine-rich foods or iodised salt is limited. Adolescents are a key target group for interventions, as early awareness can reduce the risk of iodine deficiency during future pregnancies. The EUthyroid2 project aims to raise iodine awareness among adolescents (aged 13–17y) to improve their iodine awareness and possibly iodine i…
Dental neglect in children
Background: Although largely preventable, oral health conditions in children are globally prevalent, particularly among populations with low socio-economic status and marginalized groups. Untreated oral health conditions, such as dental caries, can have severe consequences including unremitting pain, infections, reduced quality of life and lost school days. Neglect of a child’s oral health needs can also be an indicator of dental neglect, a form …
Elements of integrated care models for children and adolescents with chronic diseases – Systematic cross-diagnosis review and analysis of transferability
The prevalence of chronic diseases in childhood and adolescence increases constantly. While the five most common chronic diseases in adults account for more than 50% of all cases, the incidence of chronic diseases in children and adolescents is much more widespread. Hence, apart from challenges related to the younger age and on-going development, chronic diseases among children and adolescents are much more heterogenous and therefore, are more ch…
Developing an instrument to measure social conditions and detect needs in the care of children in German hospitals
Background: Social conditions influence children’s morbidity, well-being and health equity from pre-conception throughout their life course. Hospital in- and outpatient admissions offer an excellent non-stigmatizing opportunity for the detection of social needs, the initiation of counselling and referrals to social services, if needed. However, it is not yet routine practice to measure social conditions systematically in child health care. Thus, …
Death from Failed Protection? An Evolutionary-Developmental Theory of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has been mainly described from a risk perspective, with a focus on endogenous, exogenous, and temporal risk factors that can interact to facilitate lethal outcomes. Here we discuss the limitations that this risk-based paradigm may have, using two of the major risk factors for SIDS, prone sleep position and bed-sharing, as examples. Based on a multipronged theoretical model encompassing evolutionary theory, deve…
Attitudes toward the pandemic and Covid-19 vaccination intention among German university students and the general population
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on nearly all people. Vaccines provide an effective tool to combat the pandemic, however, vaccination hesitancy remains an issue. This study aims to investigate (a) students' attitudes toward the pandemic, (b) potential differences in attitudes between university students and the general population, and (c) to examine predictors of vaccination intention in both samples. Methods In this cross-sect…
Evaluation of a Complex Intervention to Strengthen Participation-Centred Care for Children with Special Healthcare Needs
In this study protocol we describe the design and procedures for an unblinded, stepped wedge, cluster randomised trial conducted in 15 German interdisciplinary healthcare facilities providing services for children aged 0-18 years with SHCN. Sites are randomised to five periods in which they switch from control to intervention condition in blocks of three. The intervention includes: (1) team training focused on participation-centred care, (2) intr…
Associations of individual factors and early childhood education and care (Ecec) centres characteristics with preschoolers’ BMI in Germany
The BMI of preschool children appears to be associated with determinants at the micro and meso level, however with some gender differences. The identified factors at the micro and meso level appear largely modifiable and can inform about possible interventions to reduce obesity in preschool children
Participation of children in three Bavarian inclusive primary schools
Participation is one key element of inclusive education. While the inclusion rate in German schools is rising, little is known with regard to children’s participation in this context. This study examines the participation of children with and without impairments at three inclusive primary schools in Bavaria. Cross-sectional data was collected in parents and teachers of 124 3rd grade pupils (girls: n = 62, age: M = 9.5 years; boys: n = 62, age: M …
Physical Activity during Covid-19 in German Adults
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the resulting outbreak response measures in Germany and worldwide led to severe limitations in everyday life. This affected all sorts of daily activities and the possibility for physical activity (PA), which represents a major coping strategy against stress. The objective of this study was to analyse PA in German adults during a total lockdown phase including school closures in April 2020 in certain subgroups …
Willingness to bear economic costs of measures against Sars-CoV-2 in Germany
The majority of respondents indicated willingness to sacrifice income in order to bear the costs of measures against the spread of SARS-CoV-2, with the potential health hazard caused by COVID-19 being consistently associated with this willingness. However, the proportion of individuals who were willing to give up income slightly decreased throughout the pandemic
Perceptions of Health Care Use in Germany during the Covid-19 Pandemic
This paper examined the determinants of perceived access to health care use during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany using data from two waves (8 and 16) of the COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring (COSMO). Descriptive and regression analysis were used. In wave 8, we found that about 60% of the individuals rather disagreed about having had problems accessing medical care. Furthermore, 73% of the individuals rather disagreed to having experienced health de…
Contextual influences on physical activity and eating habits -options for action on the community level
After presenting various interdisciplinary approaches to community-based health interventions, the manuscript closes with the following core message: Successful community-based health promotion strategies consist of multilevel - multicomponent interventions on the micro, meso and macro-level-environments

Positive impact of a pre-school-based nutritional intervention on children's fruit and vegetable intake
Objective To assess the short-term impact of a nutritional intervention aimed at reducing childhood overweight in German pre-school children. Design Using a cluster-randomized study design with waiting-list controls, we tested a 6-month intervention administered once weekly by a nutrition expert consisting of joint meal preparation and activities for children and parents such as tasting and preparing nutritious, fresh foods. At baseline, 6 and 12…
Validation and extension of a simple questionnaire to assess physical activity in pre-school children
Objective To (i) validate a recently proposed questionnaire tool for the simple assessment of physical activity (PA) in pre-school children by comparison with accelerometry and heart-rate recordings; and (ii) extend the tool by adding more questions to improve validity and to refine the classification from two to three categories (PA low, medium, high). Setting Baseline data of an intervention evaluation study. Subjects Pre-school children. Desig…
