Understanding engagement with an emergency department-based peer navigator intervention for opioid overdose prevention for a subset of patients experiencing homelessness
The leading cause of death among people experiencing homelessness is overdose. New York City operates the Relay initiative, which sends trained peer “Wellness Advocates” (WAs) to meet patients in the emergency department (ED) who have presented with an opioid-involved overdose. A high proportion of Relay patients experience homelessness. We conducted in-depth, one-on-one qualitative interviews with patient recipients of Relay services, Relay peer…
Letters to stakeholders: An emerging phenomenon of multi‐stakeholder engagement
We explore a new phenomenon of multi‐stakeholder orientation and engagement in corporate communication: letters to stakeholders. By applying content, semantic, and quantitative analyses to standardized corporate communication among the 100 largest multinational companies worldwide, our study reveals that approximately one‐third of the examined companies have begun to utilize what could be considered letters to stakeholders. We demonstrate that le…

Conversation about Synchronicity with Marie-Louise von Franz
Following is the content of a conversation with Marie-Louise von Franz about the concept of synchronicity. As part of a study group, Robin Mindell and Roy Freeman worked on the concept of synchronicity and thus came to interview M.-L. von Franz in her home in Küsnacht in order to find answers to their questions. The complete set of conversations with M.-L. von Franz on psyche and the sciences is soon to be published
Business in a Post-Covid World: The Move to Stakeholder Capitalism
The last 15 years have seen a remarkable set of changes in the global business environment. Established companies and start-ups alike have been subjected to some fundamental shifts in the very way that we conceptualize business. Together with some generational challenges we have seen myriad calls for a new narrative about business. And, even more recently, the COVID pandemic has reinforced a number of these shifts and led to even more fundamental…

Stakeholder Theory and the Resource-Based View of the Firm
We start this article with the exploration of similarities between the resource-based view of the firm (RBV) and stakeholder theory at the time of their origination and then proceed with the conversation on what led to distinct developmental trajectories of the two theories. Though RBV has become a leading paradigm in the strategic management field, we argue that in its current form, RBV is yet incomplete. We suggest there are four aspects that s…
Tensions in Stakeholder Theory
A number of tensions have been suggested between stakeholder theory and strategic management (SM). Following a brief review of the histories of stakeholder theory and mainstream SM, we argue that many of the tensions are more apparent than real, representing different narratives about stakeholder theory, SM, business, and ethics. Part of the difference in these two theoretical positions is due to the fact that they seek to solve different problem…
Business Cases for Sustainability: A Stakeholder Theory Perspective
The “business case for sustainability” is a notion often referenced in the corporate sustainability and corporate social responsibility literature. Whereas some see sustainability and the business case as contradictions and thus emphasize the existence of trade-offs, others highlight how (potential) business cases can be created by managing ecological, social, and economic aspects. Both views have in common that the “business case” is implicitly …
Stakeholder Theory
In the traditional view of the firm, the shareholder view, the shareholders or stockholders are the owners of the company, and the firm has a binding financial obligation to put their needs first, to increase value for them. However, stakeholder theory argues that there are other parties involved, including governmental bodies, political groups, trade associations, trade unions, communities, financiers, suppliers, employees, and customers. Someti…
Applying Stakeholder Theory in Sustainability Management: Links, Similarities, Dissimilarities, and a Conceptual Framework
This essay examines links, similarities, and dissimilarities between stakeholder theory and sustainability management. Based on the analysis a conceptual framework is developed to increase the applicability and the application of stakeholder theory in sustainability management. Concluding from the analysis, we identify three challenges of managing stakeholder relationships for sustainability: strengthening the particular sustainability interests …
Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach
Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach was first published in 1984 as a part of the Pitman series in Business and Public Policy. Its publication proved to be a landmark moment in the development of stakeholder theory. Widely acknowledged as a world leader in business ethics and strategic management, R. Edward Freeman's foundational work continues to inspire scholars and students concerned with a more practical view of how business and capit…
Stakeholder Theory: The State of the Art
In 1984, R. Edward Freeman published his landmark book, Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach, a work that set the agenda for what we now call stakeholder theory. In the intervening years, the literature on stakeholder theory has become vast and diverse. This book examines this body of research and assesses its relevance for our understanding of modern business. Beginning with a discussion of the origins and development of stakeholder theo…
Stakeholder Theory: The State of the Art
For the last 30 years a growing number of scholars and practitioners have been experimenting with concepts and models that facilitate our understanding of the complexities of today’s business challenges. Among these, “stakeholder theory” or “stakeholder thinking” has emerged as a new narrative to understand and remedy three interconnected business problems—the problem of understanding how value is created and traded, the problem of connecting eth…
Stakeholder Theory and “The Corporate Objective Revisited”
Stakeholder theory begins with the assumption that values are necessarily and explicitly a part of doing business. It asks managers to articulate the shared sense of the value they create, and what brings its core stakeholders together. It also pushes managers to be clear about how they want to do business, specifically what kinds of relationships they want and need to create with their stakeholders to deliver on their purpose. This paper offers …
Stakeholder Theory: A Libertarian Defense
Quine once wrote that "sentences do not confront the tribunal of experience alone." And, he might have added, "nor do arguments and theories". Sentences, as well as arguments and theories, always import their background conditions and related theories with them. Context plays a crucial role in social phenomena, and sometimes we need to resist the efforts of greedy reductionists to set context aside and focus on the precision of hypotheses, the co…

Stockholders and Stakeholders: A New Perspective on Corporate Governance
The purpose of this article is to show how the concept of stakeholders in an organization can be used to understand the tasks of the board of directors. The authors argue that a volunteeristic approach to questions of corporate governance which focuses on effective director behavior is preferable to structural change via legislation.
