Open Access•Paul Freathy, David Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 12

In many countries the informal food economy (IFE) plays an essential role in ensuring food access and security. In addition, IFEs can improve choice, have a positive impact upon diet as well as generate household income and employment. During the Renaissance, visual images were legitimate and authoritative sources of information that influenced behavior and directed public opinion. Against a background of political and religious unrest and growing pressure for economic reform, it is maintained that Annibale Carracci’s painting of The Butchers Shop (ca. 1580–1583) sought to legitimize the professionalism of Bologna’s butchery trades, reinforce the reputation of the guild system,…

  • Coping with Change

    Paul Freathy, Eric Calderwood•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 2

This paper examines the implications of e-commerce for retailers on three Scottish island groups. These locations are amongst the most economically fragile regions of the UK. The extensive use of e-commerce by residents has reconfigured traditional shopping patterns. The paper argues that this pattern of spending represents a form of ‘trade leakage’ with increased monies being spent off the island. The reaction from local retailers to this threat…

  • Employment Theory and the Wheel of Retailing

    Paul Freathy•ARTICLE•Service Industries Journal•1997

This article attempts to highlight the transitory nature of the retail labour market and provide a theoretical framework that accounts for the employment changes that have occurred in retailing since the Second World War. Using the concept of cyclicality embodied within the Wheel of Retailing, it identifies how at each stage of the cycle there develops a new dominant form of employment relation. The British grocery sector is taken as an example t…
