  • Agency detection in predictive minds: A virtual reality study

Marc Malmdorf Andersen, Marc Andersen et al.•ARTICLE•Religion Brain & Behavior•2019

Since its inception, explaining the cognitive foundations governing sensory experiences of supernatural agents has been a central topic in the cognitive science of religion. Following recent developments in perceptual psychology, this pre-registered study examines the effects of expectations and sensory reliability on agency detection. Participants were instructed to detect beings in a virtual forest. Results reveal that participants expecting a …

  • Pointing and reference reconsidered

    Open Access•Andy Lücking, Tom Pfeiffer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2015•Cited by: 10•References: 25

Highlights • Pointing experiments falsify direct reference theories for demonstratives. • Pointing's extension is modeled from body tracking data and computer simulations. • Referents of pointing are computed using a heuristics based on pointing cones. • Experimental results require to change the set-up of theories of language. • New set-up: pre-semantic pragmatics - compositional semantics - Gricean pragmatics. Abstract Current semantic theory o…

  • The olive branch chronology stands irrespective of tree-ring counting

    Open Access•Walter L Friedrich, Walter Friedrich et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Cherubini et al. (above) question the reliability of identifying annual growth increments in olive trees, and therefore voice caution against the result of the wiggle-match of the four sections of a branch of an olive tree to the 14C calibration curve. Friedrich et al. (2006) were well aware of the problematic density structure of olive trees, and therefore assigned rather wide error margins of up to 50 per cent to the ring count. This still resu…

  • Santorini Eruption Radiocarbon Dated to 1627-1600 B.C.

Open Access•Walter L Friedrich, Walter Friedrich et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2006

Precise and direct dating of the Minoan eruption of Santorini (Thera) in Greece, a global Bronze Age time marker, has been made possible by the unique find of an olive tree, buried alive in life position by the tephra (pumice and ashes) on Santorini. We applied so-called radiocarbon wiggle-matching to a carbon-14 sequence of tree-ring segments to constrain the eruption date to the range 1627‐1600 B.C. with 95.4% probability. Our result is in the …
