Parental decision and intent towards Covid-19 vaccination in children with asthma
These findings are essential in planning for the communication and dissemination of COVID-19 vaccination information to parents, especially for children with asthma or other chronic medical conditions
How an All-or-Nothing insurance behaviour challenges economic policies
Based on experimental data, this paper confirms, in a controlled environment, converging theoretical and empirical results that, when individuals insure, they choose to insure themselves with a full cover. This insurance behaviour creates an opportunity for the public authority to drive people to enter the insurance market where they would buy full insurance. This paper also sheds light on the risks of an opportunistic insurers’ behaviour. This h…
Willingness to pay to reduce future risk
At the core of the decision to invest in prevention are individuals who face immediate real costs against future and uncertain benefits. In this paper, we elicit subjects’ willingness to pay to reduce future risk. In our experiments, subjects are given a cash endowment and a risky lottery. They report their willingness to pay to exchange the risky lottery for a safe one. Subjects play the lottery either immediately, eight weeks later, or 25 weeks…

Dropout, School Performance, and Working while in School
We develop an econometric model where the determinants of working while in school, academic performance, and the decision to drop out are set in the context of two types of high school students: those who prefer schooling and those who are more likely to join the labor market. The likelihood function of this model with heterogeneous preferences for schooling is composed of 48 individual contributions of a standard quadrivariate normal function. E…

Cognition in Seemingly Riskless Choices and Judgments
The assumption of given and known preferences and possibilities so common in economic theory stands in contradiction with the kind of unsystematic changes that characterize many experimental and real situations. Consequently, the theory misspecifies rational choice and generates many puzzles relating to marginal analysis, sunk costs, judgments of fairness, the endowment effect, etc. We model rational cognition and learning in `seemingly riskless'…
Is Public Spending Determined by Voter Choice of Fiscal Capacity
Previous models of public spending fail to explain why high inflation rates are distributed non-randomly across countries. In the switching-regime specification proposed here, governments tend to resort to inflationary debt monetarization when the spending level chosen by voters exceeds actual revenue capacity. The voter-choice and fiscal-capacity models of earlier studies are special cases of this framework. Using cross country data for 1970, 19…

Managerial Momentum
Using a firm-level data base to estimate a simultaneous model of the interaction of performance, ambition, and rewards in the internal promotion process, the authors analyze differences between men and women in "managerial momentum"-sustained career progress within the firm. They find that in the Canadian firm studied, the tendency of women to rely more than men on formal bidding for promotion to secure offers of promotion deprives them of manage…

Estimating the Private and Social Opportunity Cost of Displaced Workers
This paper outlines a framework for the estimation of the opportunity cost of workers who are permanently displaced from their previous place of employment. It will also enable us to evaluate both the private and social costs of adjustment arising from labor displacement. This framework will then be applied to an empirical estimation of both the private and social opportunity cost of labor and the adjustment costs associated with workers laid off…

A Study of Some Aspects of Temporal Aggregation Problems in Econometric Analyses
T EMPORAL aggregation problems in econometrics pose an important but relatively unexplored set of issues relevant for analyses of economic behavior and policy problems. When the behavior of individuals, firms or other economic entities is analyzed with temporally aggregated data, it is quite possible that a distorted view of parameters' values, lag structures and other aspects of economic behavior can be obtained. Since policy decisions usually d…

Trade Adjustment Assistance
This study concentrates on the adjustment costs of laying off workers from firm which are forced to reduce production and employment. Both the private income losses to the displaced workers and the cost to the economy of labour displacement are examined. The costs of adjustment for displaced workers are measured by the difference between the present value of two income streams. The first measures what the workers would expect to receive if their …
