founder of PEPS, who was widely recognized as the father of both Regional Science and Peace Science.Walter Isard has founded PEPS in 1993 with the aim to create a novel outlet for peace economists and peace scientists. In particular, PEPS was designed to attract contributions from an interdisciplinary community of scholars from a wide variety of disciplines such as economics and political science, as well as regional science, geography and mathema…
Integrating Cultural Competence in Nursing
INTRODUCTION: Purnell's Model for Cultural Competence outlines that cultural competence is essential for bridging the gap between health care providers and patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.' METHODOLOGY: This study followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines, focusing on studies involving nurses, nursing students, and educators using Purnell's Model. Literature was searched across six databases up to July 2024. RESULTS: From 834 records, 20 studies …
Vulnerability to Climate Change and Communal Conflicts
This paper examines the influence of climate change vulnerability on the likelihood and severity of communal violence, with a particular emphasis on delineating large-scale regional patterns. Specifically, the analysis centres on Sub-Saharan Africa and South/South-East Asia – both regions being predominantly characterised by rain-fed agriculture and climate-sensitive economic activities – spanning the years 1995 to 2021. Relying on the ND-GAIN Vu…
Vaccines between war and market
This short paper presents a theoretical analysis that is intended to throw light on some issues related to the supply of vaccines in a context where producer countries are involved in armed conflicts. We present a simple model which combines elements of Hirshleifer-style economic analysis of conflict and microeconomic modelling of oligopolistic markets. In particular, we apply a simple Cournot duopoly model to two producer countries. Findings sho…
Italian small arms exports
This paper empirically investigates the determinants of Italian Small Arms and Light Weapons (hereafter SALW) exports to 143 polities from 1990 to 2017. We focus in particular on three aspects: (1) the economic drivers of SALW exports by means of a standard gravity equation of trade; (2) the internal characteristics of the importer country, namely the degree of militarization and the attitude to violence exerted by government against citizens; (3…
First evidence of fractionation on stable organic carbon isotopes in ancient Egyptian linen textile fibers during degradation
The study of the fractionation of the stable carbon isotopes 13C and 12C through the δ13C value finds applications in various fields of science, from quality control in agribusiness to the study of the geographical origin of materials. At the plant level, this information is useful to prove which photosynthetic cycle a particular plant belongs to: C3, C4 or Crassulacean Acid Metabolism. In this work, the Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometry technique…
What is the Experience of Parents During the Home Care Management of Children With Congenital Heart Disease, Following Cardiac Surgery? Findings From a Metasynthesis
The home management of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) in the postsurgical phase represents one of the most complex phases for their parents. To date, the information available in the scientific landscape regarding the experiences and difficulties faced by the parents of children with CHD during this phase is still lacking. Accordingly, the study aims to synthesize the available qualitative evidence on parents’ experience during the …
Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons
This paper analyses the trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) from 1990 to 2017. Our analysis relies on an unbalanced panel of 79,245 observations reporting SALW exports between 9275 pairs of countries. In particular, we study the impact of embargoes on trade in SALW. We use a gravity model framework including, in addition to traditional gravity variables, specifically SALW trade controls. The main results show that: (i) embargoes reduce S…
Does the Synergy Model Implementation Improve the Transition from In-Hospital to Primary Care? The Experience from an Italian Cardiac Surgery Unit, Perspectives, and Future Implications
The demand for care services in the healthcare system has changed and is triggering a smooth transition from in-hospital to primary care. In this regard, patient-centered-care models of care delivery might provide a framework to follow patients' journeys throughout their transition between different levels of care. Accordingly, an Italian research group at a cardiac hospital in Northern Italy implemented the Synergy Model in a Cardiac Surgery Uni…
International prices and continuing conflict
This article presents a theoretical model of conflict between two parties in a two-sector economy. In a ‘contested’ sector, they struggle to appropriate the maximum possible fraction of a contestable output. In an ‘uncontested’ sector, they hold secure property rights over the production of some goods. Parties split their resource endowment between ‘butter’ and ‘guns’ (in the contested sector) and ‘ice cream’ (in the uncontested sector). The mode…

Risk and protective factors for psychological distress among Italian university students during the Covid-19 pandemic
The innovation gender gap in transition countries
This paper investigates the sources of the possible gender ownership gap in innovativeness in a set of Transition economies by means of firm-level data coming from the Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS V) conducted in 2012–2014. Through the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition we highlight the factors explaining the differences in the propensity to innovate between female-owned and male-owned firms. We find that the innovation…

What Post Covid-19? Avoiding a «Twenty-first Century General Crisis»
In the following months, the COVID-19 pandemic 1 hopefully will be under control. In fact, governments worldwide are elaborating plans and strategies to live with this corona virus as long as there is no vaccine and no treatment. Social and economic activities are re-starting cautiously and they will be re-shaped substantially. However, the pandemic is going to evolve also as a major recession on a global scale which will be pervasive and (presum…

Climate change, rice crops, and violence
This article contributes to the literature on the nexus between climate change and violence by focusing on Indonesia over the period 1993-2003. Rice is the staple food in Indonesia and we investigate whether its scarcity can be blamed for fueling violence. Following insights from the natural science literature, which claims that increases in minimum temperature reduce rice yields, we maintain that increases in minimum temperature reduce food avai…

International hostility and aggressiveness on the soccer pitch
Some researchers consider soccer matches as the stylization of a war in other battlefields. Such an approach has largely been used to interpret the violent phenomena related to the soccer environment, while less attention has been paid to the potential role of political and economic interactions between countries in determining the aggressive attitude of players on the pitch. In our paper we empirically investigate whether and how political hosti…

A Trade Institution as a Peaceful Institution? A Contribution to Integrative Theory
Recent studies emphasize the occurrence of conflict as a rational economic activity along with production and exchange. Agents are assumed to divide their efforts into fighting and productive activities, as commonly denoted by “guns” and “butter.” This article tries to go beyond this “manichean” idea, assuming Boulding's concept of “integrative system.” In particular, the article investigates whether a trade institution committed to free and fair…
