Sex, Endocrines, and Political Behavior
While political behavioral differences between men and women appear to have been exaggerated, some continue to be validly observed. Evidence from several diciplines suggests that such differences may be biological in origin, mediated through the endocrine system. Variance in concentrations of certain hormones may have behavioral consequences. Since an experimental test in which these concentrations would be directly manipulated is not feasible, a…

Sophistication & Foreign-Policy Preferences: The Iranian Hostage Crisis
The Impact of Changes in Judicial Doctrine: The Abrogation of Charitable Immunity
Common law doctrines may have as significant an impact on everyday life as those of the U.S. Supreme Court. This paper focuses on the abrogation of the doctrine of charitable immunity, which has occurred in 32 states since World War II. We investigate the impact of this change on average hospital room rate charges in each state. Both static and dynamic analyses are conducted. In both we control for economic and inflationary variables by using sta…

Political Conflict and the School Teacher: An Experimental and Physiological Analysis
politics as a conflictual enterprise. The presence or absence of such representation may depend upon (1) administrative constraints, (2) the nature of the audience, and (3) cognitive orientations on the part of the teacher. Long Island school teachers were hired to produce a series of lessons, the features of which constituted measures of teaching behavior. Constraints and audience were experimentally manipulated. Cognitive orientations were dete…
Participation as Instrument and Expression: Some Evidence from the States
This study attempts to further refine and clarify the literature of policy output in the American states. Within the realm of political participation, previous studies have assumed a direct flow of influence from citizen acts to governmental activity. This study investigates two propositions relating to participation and its effect on output. First it expands the notion of participation to include indirect citizen participation through organizati…

Alienation and Support for Demagogues
Party Choice and Support for Demagogues: An Experimental Examination
The relationship of parties to democracy and to political stability has concerned scholars for years. Extant party systems have almost continually been under attack by reformers bent on achieving various objectives, among them greater party responsibility, greater honesty, and greater efficiency of governmental operation. But party systems have not suffered from a lack of defenders: reformers have often been engaged in vigorous debate. Such contr…
The Malevolent Leader: Political Socialization in an American Sub-Culture
Perhaps the most dramatic finding of recent research on the political socialization of children is that youngsters appear to be overwhelmingly favorably disposed toward political objects which cross their vision. Officers and institutions of government are regarded as benevolent, worthy, competent, serving and powerful. The implications of such findings are striking indeed. Childhood political dispositions may represent the roots of later patriot…
