politics as a conflictual enterprise. The presence or absence of such representation may depend upon (1) administrative constraints, (2) the nature of the audience, and (3) cognitive orientations on the part of the teacher. Long Island school teachers were hired to produce a series of lessons, the features of which constituted measures of teaching behavior. Constraints and audience were experimentally manipulated. Cognitive orientations were determined by polygraph analysis of conditioned galvanic skin responses to certain stimuli. Teaching behavior was found to depend upon neither constraints nor audience. While GSR-measured cognitive orientation did not affect the conflict-related content of teaching, it did appear to influence the organizational integrity of the teaching effort. The paper thus claims only partial success in terms of substantive findings. However, these findings, especially when juxtaposed to the unsatisfactory nature of a verbal measure of cognitive orientation, also suggest the utility of this type of physiological measurement technique
