  • Hesse’s Condition for Transitivity of Probabilistic Support: A Friendly Reminder

  • A New Condition for Agglomeration in Bayesian Confirmation

    Open Access•Jakob Koscholke•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2025•References: 16

Bayesian confirmation does not generally agglomerate over conjunction. That is, whenever a piece of evidence $E$ confirms two hypotheses ${H_1}$ and ${H_2}$ individually , it does not follow that $E$ also confirms them conjunctively . Here, I present a condition under which the latter does follow from the former. But this new condition reveals a surprising fact: Bayesian confirmation agglomerates over conjunction whenever the evidence in question…

  • A New Argument for Goldman and Olsson's Solution to the Extra‐Value‐of‐Knowledge Problem

    Open Access•Jakob Koscholke•ARTICLE•Theoria•2021

According to Goldman and Olsson's so‐called conditional probability solution to the extra‐value‐of‐knowledge problem, knowledge is more valuable than mere true belief because having the former makes the acquisition of further similar true beliefs in the future more likely than having the latter does. Unfortunately, however, several philosophers have rejected the comparative probability claim Goldman and Olsson's solution is based on. In this pape…

  • Coherence and Common Causes: Against Relevance-Sensitive Measures of Coherence

Open Access•Jakob Koscholke, Michael Schippers•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2019•References: 25

Changing weather conditions and barometer changes usually coincide. Accordingly, the propositions that my barometer falls and that the weather conditions deteriorate are quite coherent—especially under the assumption that there is a drop in atmospheric pressure. Nevertheless, scenarios like these involving common causes turn out to be highly problematic for a prominent class of probabilistic coherence measures, namely, those explicating coherence…
