Oral Fixation and New Testament Studies? ‘Orality’, ‘Performance’ and Reading Texts in Early Christianity
In recent decades, emphasising the ‘orality/aurality’ of the Roman world, some scholars have asserted that in early Christian circles texts were ‘performed’, not ‘read’ (and could not have been read), likening this action to descriptions of oratorical delivery of speeches (from memory) or theatrical performance. It has even been suggested that some texts, particularly the Gospel of Mark, were composed in ‘performance’, and not through an author w…

Resurrection-Faith and the ‘Historical’ Jesus
It is clear that a remarkable Jesus-devotion, in which Jesus was accorded unprecedented kinds of reverence, was central in early Christian faith from its earliest extant expressions, and represents a significant escalation from the kinds of reverence that followers expressed during Jesus’ earthly ministry. This devotion seems to have been prompted by the conviction that God had raised Jesus from death and given him heavenly glory. The impact of J…
Jesus' Resurrection in the Early Christian Texts
Wright's latest book in his multi-volume treatment of 'the New Testament and God' reveals an impressive amount of research and reflection on practically every topic. The size and detail of Wright's book make it difficult to do justice to it, and it requires anyone who engages it in such a limited presentation to select matters for particular attention. This is an attempt to contribute productively by offering critique of certain matters, particul…

Homage To the Historical Jesus and Early Christian Devotion
What continuity or discontinuity is there between the remarkable devotion to Jesus as divine figure in earliest Christianity and the sorts of homage/ reverence that was given to the earthly Jesus? The intra-canonical Gospels exhibit notable differences in the ways that they portray the homage given to Jesus in his ministry, particularly in the language that they prefer. Mat thew is distinctive in a programmatic portrayal of the homage given to Je…

The Way of the Lord
Convert, apostate or apostle to the nations
