  • Unconscious Causation and Control of Human Behavior During Dissociation

    Open Access•Robert A King•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Consciousness•2026

Modern research has suggested that almost all human behavior occurs with an interaction between conscious and unconscious processes. However, the exact degree and specifics of that association are still a matter of debate. This article draws attention to an additional domain of consciousness related to that particular conversation that might be beneficial in resolving some of the disagreements that exist. Salient implications can be derived from …

  • Spirit's Cybernetic Externalization in the Capital System: Positing the Hegelian Presupposition of the Human-Environment Relation

    Robert A King, Robert King•ARTICLE•Dialogo•2025

This essay examines how cybernetic concepts in the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel offer a rich understanding of spiritual modes of human evolution within capitalism. Where there exists a tendency to view the human-environment (human-capitalist social formation) relation on too conventionally humanistic terms, I suggest that Hegel’s concepts help us to construct, but also to contend with, a transhuman, cybernetic, and objective trend in capitalism’s d…

  • The Bereaved Detachment Experience: An NDE-like Phenomenon

    Open Access•Robert A King•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2025

When people experience the death of loved ones, some of them report after-death communications (ADCs) in which they have the impression of again encountering those loved ones by means of different types of visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, and/or sentient phenomena. There is one particular type of ADC that can be referred to as a bereavement detachment experience (BDE) because the experient has the impression of being out of and/or away from …

  • Visual memories of living loved ones during life-threatening incidents

    Robert A King•ARTICLE•Mortality•2025•References: 27

During real or presumed life-threatening incidents and/or near-death circumstances, some people experience a visual life relations reminder (VLRR), which consists primarily of imagery portraying and focused on living loved ones that visually appear in an uncontrollable and/or rapid manner. This phenomenon differs from the more recognised life review that also sometimes occurs under similar conditions, which is instead a visual memory revival of p…

  • An exploratory study of alternative life experiences in comparison to transcendental near-death experiences

    Open Access•Robert A King•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Consciousness•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 23

The term near-death experience (NDE) generally refers to a state of altered consciousness that can occur during real or presumed near-death circumstances and/or life-threatening incidents. The NDE usually includes the impression of being conscious while out of and/or away from the physical body, often accompanied by other specific features. Furthermore, when the experient has the impression of being in a perceived locality that transcends the obs…

  • Recognizing the Death Motif in the Near-Death Experience

    Open Access•Robert A King•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2023

The typical near-death experience (NDE) is generally understood as an altered state of consciousness in which the experient has the impression of existing as an extrapersonal self out of and/or away from their physical body during real or presumed life-threatening and/or near-death circumstances. This presumed extrapersonal self can sometimes have a perception of being located within the proximity of the physical body whereas at other times it is…

  • The Near-Death Experience and Suicidal Ideation

    Open Access•Robert A King•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2023

The near-death experience (NDE) most generally refers to a state of altered consciousness with various features that can occur during real or presumed near-death circumstances and/or life-threatening incidents. Some NDEs are associated with a nonfatal suicide attempt. This paper discusses how a belief by suicide attempters that their NDEs are a true portrayal of objective spiritual reality can at least in some cases be positively associated with …

  • The Near-Death Experience and Self-Determination Theory

    Open Access•Robert A King•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2022

When people experience a near-death or life-threatening incident, they sometimes report an altered state of consciousness in which they have the perception of being out of or away from their physical body. During such an experience these individuals at times have the impression of encountering a spiritual personage who offers them a choice to stay or return to their physical life and/or attempts to motivate them to willingly do so, sometimes conf…

  • Charting two centuries of transformation in a coastal social-ecological system: A mixed methods approach

    Open Access•Ruth H Thurstan, Ben K Diggles et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Oyster reef ecosystems used to form significant components of many temperate and subtropical inshore coastal systems but have suffered declines globally, with a concurrent loss of services. The early timing of many of these changes makes it difficult to determine restoration targets which consider interdecadal timeframes, community values and shifted baselines. On the Australian continent, however, the transition from Indigenous (Aboriginal) to W…

On both occasions the interviewer asked for a first career choice; if something other than a real job was given, the interviewer asked for a second choice. During the September interview, 74% supplied a “real” career as their first choice and 10% gave real career responses as a second choice. Eight months later, 89% gave real careers as a…
