  • Understanding policymaker support of energy decarbonization policies for buildings

    Open Access•Reid Dorsey-Palmateer, Imran Sheikh et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2026•References: 17

  • Impacts of sea-level rise and wave inundation in the Tongariki Complex, Rapa Nui

    Open Access•Noah Paoa, Charles H Fletcher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2025•References: 1

Assessed sea level rise impacts on a section of a cultural World Heritage Site. • Applied the XBeach numerical wave model to evaluate future inundation impacts. • Waves are projected to reach Ahu Tongariki by the end of the century. • Cultural assets impacted by inundation are projected to triple with 1.2 m of sea-level rise. Sea-level rise (SLR) threatens both modern assets and the irreplaceable, tangible heritage of past coastal settlements. As…

  • Vessel noise prior to pile driving at offshore windfarm sites deters harbour porpoises from potential injury zones

    Open Access•Aude Benhemma-Le Gall, Philip Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2023•References: 42

Efforts to meet climate change targets are resulting in rapid and global expansion of offshore windfarms. In many regions, development areas are also used by protected marine mammals, requiring the assessment and mitigation of any risk of injury during construction and operation. For small cetaceans such as the harbour porpoise, there is particular concern over the risk of injury from impulsive noise should individuals remain within near-field in…

  • Underwater noise modelling for environmental impact assessment

    Open Access•Adrian Farcas, Philip Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 32

Assessment of underwater noise is increasingly required by regulators of development projects in marine and freshwater habitats, and noise pollution can be a constraining factor in the consenting process. Noise levels arising from the proposed activity are modelled and the potential impact on species of interest within the affected area is then evaluated. Although there is considerable uncertainty in the relationship between noise levels and impa…

  • Framework for assessing impacts of pile-driving noise from offshore wind farm construction on a harbour seal population

    Open Access•Philip Thompson, Paul M Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 42

Offshore wind farm developments may impact protected marine mammal populations, requiring appropriate assessment under the EU Habitats Directive. We describe a framework developed to assess population level impacts of disturbance from piling noise on a protected harbour seal population in the vicinity of proposed wind farm developments in NE Scotland. Spatial patterns of seal distribution and received noise levels are integrated with available da…

  • The Structure of Civil Hierarchy in Tekanto, Yucatan

    Open Access•Philip Thompson•ARTICLE•Estudios de Cultura Maya•2013

The contemporary municipios of Yucatan do not contain the ‘Indian’ governments, often called ‘civil-religious hierarchies’, typical of their Chiapan and Guatemalan counterparts. Indian governments, known as cabildos or repúblicas de indígenas, were abolished by the Yucatecan government in 1868 and failed to reappear with the reestablishment of the municipio libre under the Constitution of 1917. Before 1868, however, and particularly before Indepe…

  • Mitigating flood losses in the active floodplains of Bangladesh

Open Access•Philip Thompson, Paul M Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Disaster Prevention and…•1998

The inhabitants of the active floodplain of Bangladesh’s main rivers receive little government support to help them cope with floods and have developed their own strategies. Major flood projection works are not possible in these areas where floods and erosion annually affect many vulnerable people. Surveys of the impact of severe floods found that total losses and the dislocation to their lives is substantial. These loss data were used to assess …
