Through the perspectives of international and Canadian researchers, Reform of Retirement Income Policy focuses on many key reform issues: future income prospects for the elderly, roles of the public and private sectors, fairness and intergenerational equity, affordability and economic impacts, public ex…

  • Wage-Pension Trade-offs in Collective Agreements

Morley Gunderson, Douglas Hyatt et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Analyzing 98 matched collective agreements and flat benefit pension plans in Ontario in 1984, the authors find evidence of a significant trade-off between wages and an actuarially constructed summary measure of the expected future pension costs for employers. With respect to the separate components of the pension plans, they find a significant trade-off between wages and the main item that is bargained over-the flat benefit rate-but not between w…

  • Eliminating Mandatory Retirement

    Morley Gunderson, James E Pesando•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1980•Cited by: 6

The arguments in favour of banning mandatory retirement namely, to relieve the pension burden on future generations, and to guarantee the human rights of olders workers merit more critical scrutiny than they appear to have received in the current debate. Similarly, one of the arguments against banning mandatory retirement that of opening employment opportunities for youth is ambiguous theoretically and requires further empirical evidence. More at…

  • On the Efficiency of the Bond Market

    James E Pesando•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1978•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This paper proposes and tests the joint hypothesis that (1) the bond market is efficient and (2) the variation in long-term bond rates is due solely to expectations effects. Under this joint hypothesis, long-term bond rates for any fixed maturity follow (approximately) a martingale sequence. Tests with Canadian data serve not only to support the joint hypothesis but also to cast doubt upon the usefulness of the "preferred habitat" model of Modigl…
