  • Ethnic Mosaic

    Open Access•Leo Driedger•CHAPTER•Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2017

The analogy of the mosaic is useful in answering three questions: How are the tiles in the mosaic distributed? Do the tiles all have equal influence? What is the nature of each of the tiles in the total design? Ethnic mosaic applies this to the variety of ethnic and cultural groups in plural societies. Some think the model of mosaic is too boundary oriented and have suggested that we need to focus more on ethnic networks and social ties to link t…

  • Multiculturalism: Sorting Identities, Rights, and Conflicts

    Leo Driedger•ARTICLE•Canadian ethnic studies•2011•References: 7

Multiculturalism studies in Canada evolved into three major visions and debates after World War II. In the early 1970s, the British and French peoples assumed monolingual-monocultural states, and expected that others would assimilate into their dominant cultures. In the 1970s, this was changed to official bilingual and multicultural visions where more diversity was accepted. By the 1980s, demographic diversity called for debates on equal rights f…

  • Changing Visions in Ethnic Relations

    Open Access•Leo Driedger•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•2001•Cited by: 2

Early studies focused on the relations between the dominant British and French charter groups, before Pierre Trudeau announced a policy of bilingualism and multiculturalism in 1971. A Royal Commission encouraged more research, where the focus of study turned from colonial to multicultural and multiethnic identity concerns, resulting in more open immigration policies. More immigrants of multiple races, religions, and cultures arrived, which requir…

  • Race and Racism: Canada’s Challenge

Shiva Halli, Shivalingappa S Halli et al.•BOOK•Race and Racism•2000

Race and Racism brings together critical contributions from the academic and government sectors that analyse the nature and extent of racism in Canada. The broad spectrum of social scientific approaches represented here - sociology, cultural anthropology, demography, and psychology - and an equal emphasis on quantitative and qualitative methods make this study a particularly rich source for scholars and policy makers alike. Discussion unfolds alo…

The impact…

The United Nations Conference held in Cairo in September 1994 was dominated by the debate on abortion. The strong opposition to abortion, and attacks on feminist attitudes by the Vatican could not be ignored, even though many Catholics in Catholic countries did not share the Vatican's views (Keyfitz 1995, pp. 81-89). Support for the Vatican from Muslims also made abortion a significant issue in the debate and resulted in the 1994 Conference havin…

Open Access•Bruno Dyck, Nealia S Bruning et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Conflict…•1996

Generally, this study contributes to our understanding of the situations when conflict facilitates performance versus when it hampers performance. More specifically, the study distinguishes between conflict potential, conflict stimulus, and actual conflict. We present two hypotheses that compare two competing views to further disentangle whether and when conflict is functional. Our empirical tests, using a sample of Mennonite congregations, lead …

    Open Access•Leo Driedger•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•1995•References: 4

Minorities adjust to society by shifting strategies. Survey samples in the United States and Canada indicate that Mennonites are becoming more urban, professional, and mobile. Good closing, such as support of religious values, norms, beliefs, morals, and practice, is stronger in rural areas than in the city. As urbanization increases, good opening, such as political participation and equal treatment of women and races, also rises between 1972 and…

    Leo Driedger•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1976•Cited by: 21

The purpose of this study is to define and explain various expressions of ethnicity by the use of an inventory designed to measure degrees of self-identity with respect to ingroup affirmation, ingroup denial, ideal self-identity, and real self-identity. A comparison of seven Winnipeg ethnic groups in relation to these factors indicated strong ingroup affirmation among the French and the Jews and a low degree of ingroup affirmation among British, …

    Open Access•Leo Driedger•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1974•Cited by: 4•References: 10

An association between doctrinal beliefs and positions on social issues is posited. This study of the clergy in an industrial city demonstrated that doctrinal orthodoxy had an independent effect on positions taken on issues related to social control, personal morality, use of power by the elite, civil liberties, minority rights, and welfare support. Absolutist clergymen with a doctrinally conservative other-worldly focus were reluctant to change …
