  • Technological choice & social change: A multi-analytical study of late roman and early medieval coarseware ceramics from the southeastern alpine region

Open Access•K Patrick Fazioli, Matej Dolenec et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

  • Human influence at the Holocene treeline in the Julian Alps, Slovenia

    Open Access•Nina Caf, Paul Sabatier et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2025•References: 71

Fluctuations in timber/treeline have largely been subjected to past climatic changes; but throughout the Holocene humans became one of the leading drivers of these changes. By understanding the reasons for timber/treeline changes, we retraced past climate variability and/or anthropogenic impact on the alpine environment. This study focussed on the sedimentary sequence of the Lake ‘Jezero v Ledvicah’ (Julian Alps, Slovenia), which is currently loc…

  • Pottery Firing in the Early Iron Age in Western Slovenia

    Open Access•Manca Vinazza, Matej Dolenec•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2022

The article discusses the possible use of kilns for the firing of pottery in western Slovenia during the Early Iron Age. In the absence of archaeologically attested kilns, their use in this area is studied based on indirect factors, i.e. the analysis of the vessel firing technique, and with the help of experiments from the field of experimental archaeology. The article strives to determine the reasons for the poor state of preservation of the kil…

  • Identification and provenance determination of stone tesserae used in mosaics from Roman Celeia, Slovenia

Open Access•Snježana Miletić, Andrej Šmuc et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 24

This study examined the provenance of stone tesserae from three Roman mosaics from Celje, Slovenia, using optical microscopy, X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. Nine microfacies were distinguished. Miliolid limestones identified in the white tesserae, and mudstones/laminated wackestones in the black tesserae, suggest they originated from the Karst region. The sparry limestone in the yellow tesser…

  • Variety of Black and White Limestone Tesserae Used in Ancient Mosaics in Slovenia

Open Access•Andrej Šmuc, Matej Dolenec et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 14

This study concerns the microfacies characterization of white and black limestone tesserae from selected Roman floor mosaics in Slovenia, with the aim of defining their provenance. We investigated 42 tesserae from 15 different mosaics from the archaeological sites of Ljubljana, Izola, Mošnje, Ptuj, Črnomelj and Šentpavel, dated from the first century bc to the fifth century ad . Among the studied tesserae, 13 different microfacies were identified…
