Fluctuations of sediment accumulation rates in front of an Arctic delta in Greenland
An automated layer counting technique is developed to estimate the chronology of a marine sediment core and this technique is validated with Pb 210 chronology. The marine sediment core was sampled in front of the delta of Mittivakkat Glacier meltwater river in the Sermilik Fjord, SE Greenland, and is a proxy of the sediment delivery from a glacial drainage basin to a fjord. The estimated time series was based on automatic lamination detection (va…
At the edge
A multi-disciplinary study of settlement in north-east Greenland found that life in this High Arctic zone was actually favoured by the climate brought in by the Little Ice Age (fifteenth-nineteenth century). Extensive ice cover meant high mobility, and the rare polynyas - small patches of permanently open coastal water - provided destinations, like oases, where huge numbers of migrating marine mammals and birds congregated. One such place was Wal…
Coastal environments around Thule settlements in Northeast Greenland
Inuit have travelled to and settled in the coastal landscapes of Northeast Greenland for several longer periods during the latest ca. 4500 years. Most recently the Thule culture Inuit lived in the region from around 1400 until 1850 AD. The access to partly and periodically ice covered near coastal waters has been crucial to the primarily marine based subsistence strategy of the Thule Inuit culture, and their settlements are therefore found immedi…

Climatic conditions at the Mittivakkat Glacier catchment (1994–2006), Ammassalik Island, SE Greenland, and in a 109-year perspective (1898–2006)
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(1):51–72, 2008 The present-day climate in the Mittivakkat Glacier catchment (65°N), Southeast Greenland, is investigated spatiotemporally based on time series (13 years, 1994–2006) and standard synoptic climate data from the meteorological station in Tasiilaq (Ammasslik), covering 109 years (1898–2006). Within the catchment, meteorological conditions are monitored at the coast (Station Coast,…
Holocene changes in climate and vegetation in the Ammassalik area, East Greenland, recorded in lake sediments and soil profiles
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(1):21–50, 2008 Holocene climatic, vegetational and environmental changes on the Ammassalik Island in SE Greenland (65.5 N and 37.5 W) have been studied in lake sediments and soil profiles. Based on the stratigraphy of sediments, geobiochemical characteristics, pollen and other biological proxies, a history of the land is outlined. The overall and continued climatic cooling during the Holocene…
Meteorological observations 2006 and ground temperature variations over 12-year at the Sermilik Station, Ammassalik Island, Southeast Greenland
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(1):153–161, 2008 Meteorological stations have been in operation since 1993 at the Sermilik Research Station (65°40′N, 38°10′W), Ammassalik Island, Southeast Greenland. This note presents meteorological observations for the calendar year 2006 from the two meteorological stations: Station Nunatak (515 m a.s.l.) and Station Coast (25 m a.s.l.). The year 2006 record is not complete due to a tempo…

Meteorological observations 2005 and in a longer perspective at the Sermilik Station, Ammassalik Island, Southeast Greenland
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 107(2):59–68, 2007 Meteorological stations have been in operation since 1993 at Sermilik (65°40'N, 38°10'W), Ammassalik Island, southeast Greenland. This note presents meteorological observations for the year 2005 from the two meteorological stations: Station Nunatak (515 m a.s.l.) and Station Coast (25 m a.s.l.). The year 2005 was dominated by a temporal break down of Station Nunatak and defect …

Geomorphology and Sedimentary Record of Three Cuspate Forelands as Indicators of Late Holocene Relative Sea-level Changes, Disko, West Greenland
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 97: 33–46, 1997. The coastal geomorphology of three cuspate forelands at Saqqarliit Ilorliit, western Disko, West Greenland is described, sediment core data from salt marshes and lagoons are presented, an emergence curve is constructed, and data are discussed in relation to late Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) changes. On western Disko, falling RSL in early-middle Holocene was followed by risin…

Effect of Permafrost and Palaeo-Environmental History on Soil Formation in the lower Kolyma Lowland, Siberia
Danish Journal of Geography 96: 40–50, 1996. The Geography of soils has been studied in the tundra of the sandy Kolyma Lowland between latitudes 69 ° and 70 ° N. Generally, soils show characteristics indicative of variable intensity of previous fossil Podzol formation in the present day cryoturbated active layer. Hence, the transformation, transfer and segregation of chemical substances in the soil profile can be interpreted as evidence of palaeo…

Soil resources and soil erosion in the Norse settlement area of østerbygden in southern Greenland
